Olympic Roundup - Final Weekend

The Olympics are officially winding down as we're in to the final weekend. So, here's a hodgepodge of previews and reviews of the climactic final days of the Olympics!

Hockey
-The dream final is on after Canada and the U.S. were victorious in semifinal action. The only surprise might have been how truly dominant the US was. Nobody, not even the most fair-weather Olympic Hockey Patriot, would have guessed the U.S. would score 6 goals in the 1st against a usually cool and collected Finnish team. Also, Canada has to be scratching their heads after putting up 7 goals on Russia and barely holding on to beat Slovakia. However well Canada might have looked against the Russians, the U.S. has been the most consistent side in the tournament with the best goalie in Ryan Miller - a huge advantage over Roberto Luongo. They've already won once against the hostile Canadian crowd, and will need an early lead to play with once again if they want to hang on to a gold medal and take revenge for Salt Lake City.

-On the women's side, the amount of controversy over the Canadian women's celebration seems contrived and overblown. So the women went back on the ice with beer and cigars? Big deal. It's not like they were double-fisting as the gold medals were being handed out, they waited until the fans had left the arena. And I'm tired about any outrage over underage drinking in a society that refuses to enforce it, but that's another story for another blog. Let them celebrate the achievement they've worked so hard for the last 4 years and stop trying to create controversy out of nothing.

Curling
-Unfortunately, the hottest star of these Olympics (and we do mean that literally), Canadian women's skip Cheryl Bernard, blew two opportunities at the gold medal against Sweden. It's heartbreaking for Bernard, who had been flawless in the clutch up until the final. If she'd gone on to win, she might have had a future outside of curling with her poise and ease in the spotlight. Now, she's one of many Olympians who will be forgotten until 2014.

-Meanwhile, on the men's side, the heavily favored Canadian men, undefeated in group play, are looking to win the gold medal against Norway. Canada skip Kevin Martin (nicknamed the Old Bear, which I think is only a good nickname if you're a curler) is basically the Michael Jordan of curling, except he hasn't won the big prize of Olympic gold. In fact, he lost the gold medal in 2002 against Norway. Meanwhile, the Norwegian team has impressed mainly because of their snazzy dress and audience with their king, but skip Thomas Ulsrud has been unflappable so far in these Games. Expect a tight contest, but also look for the Old Bear to remain unbeaten and take the title.

Speed Skating/Skiing
-So Apollo Ohno got disqualified last night and Lindsey Vonn crashed through another gate and failed to advance in the Giant Slalom event. As Harry Doyle once said, I think I'll wet my pants. Sure, Ohno has won 8 medals in his career now, but he lacks the dominance of a Michael Phelps to truly transcend as a legendary Olympian, although he is one of the best ever. Ohno also had a legit gripe over his DQ, it is a bit odd that a Canadian judge would be in a position to disqualify a U.S. skater to the benefit of two Canadians, but we already knew the Olympics/IOC were corrupt. Meanwhile, the Glamour Girl Vonn has disappointed after her gold medal early on in the games. It seems as if her mini-spat with teammate Julie Mancuso has also taken some of the luster off NBC and SI's golden girl. There goes that afternoon talk show Lindsey, sorry.

-Meanwhile, today, Bode Miller is looking for yet another gold medal. Even if Bode doesn't win another gold, he should be the most memorable star from these Olympics. Four years ago he was left for dead after his brattish display in Torino netted zero medals. But after settling down with family life, Miller is finally reaching his potential. Unfortunately, it's harder for our athletes to be redeemed from being jerks than anything else. Maybe if he'd claimed to be a sex addict, or killed puppies, or shot himself on accident he'd get more time on ESPN.

Bobsled
-The biggest under-the-radar story you should pay attention to today is the USA Bobsled team led by Steven Holcomb. The U.S. leads after 2 of 4 heats over the more fancied Canadians and Germans at the scary fast Olympic track. If Holcomb can continue to set track records, he'd bring home the 1st U.S. gold in the 4-man bobsled in 62 years! Maybe more importantly, a medal in this event could set an all-time record in the medal count for a single Winter Olympics.

Hope you'll enjoy the rest of the Olympics and root on the Yanks to history! If North America survives the gold medal game on Sunday, we'll be back for an Olympic recap and the beginning of our basketball frenzy with the Madness approaching like a thief in the night. Also, stay tuned for Brother Yohey's continuing draft breakdowns. Enjoy the curling and bobsled while you can...they won't be back for another 4 years! Until next time, it's bye for now!

The Legend of Kevin Durant

Quick. Who is the most underrated person in sports.

Is it an Olympian like Ryan Miller? Leading his country in Vancouver while playing superb hockey in Buffalo for the Sabres.

A good candidate, but Miller is widely regarded as one of the best players in the NHL already.

Is it Drew Brees? Super Bowl champion who has put up staggering numbers the past few seasons and is only now receiving the praise he deserves?

A great choice, but his appearances on Letterman and Ellen have turned him into a crossover star, no longer underrated.

Is it an anonymous potential Hall of Famer like Hanley Ramirez. Bonus points if you actually know the sport, team and position.

Maybe, but I'm not Tim Kurkjan.

No, the most underrated player in sports just finished one of the best runs his sport has ever seen. He's transformed himself into a Top 5 player in his league almost overnight. In fact, he's a leading candidate for MVP - and yet, nobody truly appreciates what he is doing, or what he might be capable of doing.

His name is Kevin Durant.

Last night his streak of 29 straight games of 25 points or more ended in San Antonio. It was another decade the last time Durant scored less than 25 points. It was the longest such streak since '86-'87 and some guy named Jordan. He only scored 21, but also had 12 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in a Thunder defeat.

The thing about Durant is that he's not a superstar, although he belongs in that category. The debate about the best player in the league constantly revolves around Kobe v LeBron, LeBron v Kobe. Kevin Durant only gets a conciliatory mention when speaking of MVP candidates or the best players in the league. Yet, these numbers don't lie. As a 6'9" 2 Guard, Durant is scary good. He is tied for the league lead in scoring at 29.8 PPG as a 47.9% shooter, 38.1% 3PT shooter, and 88.2% foul shooter. He shoots a better percentage across the board than Bryant, Anthony, or Wade. Only LeBron James shoots a better % than Durant from the field. The only statistical area where Durant lags behind is his 2.9 APG. Here's the major difference though between Durant and the other top players in the league though...

Kevin Durant is 21 years old and playing his 3rd year of pro ball!!!!

Durant is averaging almost 10 more PPG than Kobe Bryant in his 3rd year. LeBron James and Michael Jordan both averaged more than 30 PPG in their 3rd years, but they shot the ball much more than Durant. Jordan averaged 37.1 PPG on almost 28 shots per game while LeBron averaged 31.4 PPG on 23 shots per game. Durant's efficiency is insane. He's T1 in the league in scoring while only averaging just over 20 shots per game (James has a similar efficiency this season). While Durant lacks James' passing ability, don't you think Cleveland fans would like a little more consistency from the King's perimeter game? And, at 21 years of age, it's only going to get better from here for Durantula (I kinda like the nickname). Durant is just scraping the surface on what he is capable of doing. In his third year, he's still learning how to harness his incredible tools. His size, athleticism, and shooting ability makes him a basketball freak.
Durant is also the unquestioned #1 on a young OKC Thunder team that has far surpassed expectations. The Thunder are 10 games above .500 in the extremely tough Western Conference and Durant has his team above the likes of San Antonio, Portland, New Orleans, and Houston. (Is it a bad time to bring up that Portland passed on Durant for an injured big man now best known for having his junk seen by millions?) Durant doesn't have the all-around game that LeBron James does, and probably never will. But, we are watching the best scorer of a generation blossom before our very eyes - do we notice, or do we even care?

He doesn't have the glitz and glamour of the Lakers, the billboards and marketing bonanza of James, or the championship history of Wade. Durant isn't a vocal guy; he doesn't strike you as someone who is in a rush to get his name into the lights. Thankfully, he's not Tim Duncan either. But pay close attention to one of the best things going in sports right now. Over the next few years, Durant has the ability and potential to be one of the best basketball players who has ever lived. One day you will want to tell your grandkids that you were there to watch the legend of Kevin Durant from the beginning.

Hot off the Grill - Olympics on Ice

Today is a huuuge day in Vancouver, and our Hot off the Grill preview article is back! The quarterfinals of the men's hockey tournament are upon us, featuring the titanic showdown between Canada and Russia tonight. Also, men's curling has a dramatic tiebreak to get into the medal round featuring Gold Medal contender Great Britain. So break out the slabs of Canadian bacon and follow me! Hopefully we don't Shuster this preview...

Big Kielbasa's Game Of the Week - #6 Canada v #3 Russia 7pm CNBC
-Get out the way Ron Insana, Larry Kudlow, and Jim Cramer. The biggest game of the Olympics, and one of the great rivalries in international competition is coming to... CNBC? Uhhh... ok. The hopes, dreams, and sanity of an entire nation are on the line tonight as Canada plays Russia in what many thought was going to be the Gold Medal game. Canada is showing signs of panic pulling Marty Brodeur and demoting Rick Nash off the top line. Eric Staal will partner Sidney Crosby and Jarome Iginla, while Roberto Luongo will step in between the pipes. Canada demolished Germany 8-2, but that still isn't enough to ease the nerves of a nation. Canada needs their amazing roster to actually start playing like the best players in the world, especially Crosby and Iginla.

Russia though hasn't been playing world class hockey, either. They were 2-1 in the prelims, losing to Slovakia in OT. Alex Ovechkin's biggest contribution to the Olympics has been knocking out Jaromir Jagr in a bonecrushing hit. All of the attention will be on Ovechkin and Crosby, but it could be Pittsburgh's Evgeni Malkin that is the difference in this game. Malkin is overshadowed so often by Crosby and Ovechkin, but is just as talented. However, Russia doesn't have the class from top to bottom that Canada does. Which stars perform best? Will the pressure get to the Canucks, or is home-ice too much to overcome? A hard game to pick, and I usually have a terrible record picking, so I'm going with... PICK - Canada

Beer Brat's Spotlight Game Of the Week - #1 USA v #8 Switzerland 3pm NBC
-USA Hockey is back in the spotlight with a nationally televised afternoon game against heavy underdog Switzerland. The US beat the Swiss easily early on in the tournament, but SUI did take Canada into a shootout. The US's physical style should give the Swiss problems, and they should not have trouble getting a victory and moving on to the semis. I like that Brian Burke and the rest of the team are keeping their nose to the grindstone and keeping the same hard-working mentality that saw them past Canada. Ryan Miller has been the MVP of the tourney so far, and I would expect Blackhawks F Patrick Kane to bag a goal or two today. The US can make a statement to the rest of the tournament today with an impressive victory. PICK - USA

Chorizo's Upset Of the Week - #4 Finland v #5 Czech Republic 10pm CNBC
-I'm sure not that many people were watching the Czech Republic-Latvia play-in game late last night. The Czechs had a 2-0 lead, but Latvia scored 2 3rd period goals to force OT. Even though the Czechs had many more NHLers, they struggled mightily to close out Latvia. Eventually they got the OT win, but now has to turn around and face Finland with Jaromir Jagr a question mark. Let's be honest, this isn't the likeliest upset in the world, but I don't see any of the other 3 hockey games being an upset possibility. The Finns are the weakest of the Top 4 seeds, and if Tomas Vokoun steps up, the Czechs have enough firepower to win. PICK-Czech Republic

Andouille's Under the Radar Game - Curling Playoff - GBR v Sweden 5pm MSNBC
-Men's Curling also takes center stage today with a play-in game to the medal round featuring World Champ David Murdoch facing off against Sweden. The Scots lost to 2 seed Norway last night to set up the playoff with Sweden. Norway was given a boost by having King Harald V in attendance - yea, curling is that big of a deal. Sweden and Niklas Edin won Gold at the 2009 Euros and won't be a pushover. Sweden beat GBR 6-4 in the prelims, but Murdoch is a guy that actually wants the pressure on him to throw the winning rock (unlike the American curlers we'll get to below). GBR to win, setting up another classic with #1 seed Canada with Kevin Martin, but it'll be tight and close throughout. PICK - GBR

Extra Toppings -
-The other QF hockey game pits defending champ Sweden against Slovakia in the 2/7 matchup. Sweden's big win was a 3-0 victory over Finland, and they should be able to beat the Slovaks in the nightcap.
-This might be the best Olympic look alike I've ever seen...
Germany Men's Curling Skip Andy Kapp
David Wallace of The Office
-At least USA curling went out with a bang. I do feel sorry for John Shuster, he's giving it his best and representing his country as an Olympian, not a million dollar pro. Hopefully he comes back in 4 years and is able to find redemption. But comments like, "I'm sick of this stupid game" during his last game won't endear himself to fans across America. Some of the best Shuster-related tweets...

ZamboniRodeo All those Mitch Williams jokes we used to tell in Philadelphia in 1993 could probably work for John Shuster now.

TheRealPSJ John Shuster strikes me as the type of person who always tries to pay for things with exact change even though he never has it.

jeffreybigmoney Yeah, John Shuster, I'm sick of your stupid game too!!

Psilocyn I'm glad the Olympics is almost over, if i see johnshuster throw 1 more missed shot i'll lose faith in america

SPBowley John Shuster needs a hug. #curling #Shustered

malitzd john shuster should be deported. ideally to a countrythat could teach him how to curl.

sportsguy33 Just signed a lucrative deal to ghost-write John Shuster's autobiography, "Sorry, Guys."

Man alive.

FYI, that last tweet was from the one and only Bill Simmons. The happiest person on the planet is USA Women's Skip Debbie McCormick. The former world champ took the US Women to a last place finish at 2-7, equaling the epic Shuster fail. McCormick took herself out of throwing last rocks and showed about as much ability in the clutch as Greg Norman. Hopefully these Olympics inspire more interest in USA curling... because millions of Americans now feel that they can make the Olympics as curlers.
-On the Women's Curling side, #1 seed Canada and Cheryl Bernard appear to be the favorites, but it is a tough Top 4. They face the Swiss in the semis while Sweden and China face off. My bet is Canada over China to win the Gold.

Randall's Got His Eye On... Roberto Luongo
-Roberto Luongo is the captain and hometown goalie of the Vancouver Canucks. He'll never face as much pressure in his entire NHL career than what he'll feel tonight replacing all-time goalie Marty Brodeur in the net for Canada. Luongo allowed 2 goals against Germany in an 8-2 win, but both goals were somewhat lucky. People north of the border are trying to talk themselves into thinking that Luongo is the man to lead Canada. Is it a bad time to remind Canadians that last year in the Stanley Cup Playoffs he allowed 7 goals to the Blackhawks in the deciding Game 6? Luongo must play the game of his life for Canada today to keep their Gold Medal dream alive.

That's it for our Hot off the Grill Preview. We're looking forward to an awesome day of Olympic action, it only comes along once every 4 years so enjoy it while you can! Bye for now!

2010 NFL Draft Preview - Running Backs

Time to welcome back our pal Brother Yohey for his look at the Top 5 Running Backs of the Class of 2010. Running backs are in the news with the release of LT and Brian Westbrook the last two days. As George Jones would ask, "who's gonna fill their shoes?" Over the next couple weeks stay tuned to RSS as we'll go through our position group breakdowns as we approach the combine and the excitement of the NFL Draft!

This time around, I judge the best in the backfield to see what RBs stand above the rest in the 2010 NFL Draft. Similar format to the QB rankings. As a reminder, these aren't the first 5 running backs that will be selected, but rather the 5 running backs who will have the best pro careers. Let's get it on!

1. C.J. Spiller (Clemson)
Strengths: Spiller was the best RB in the nation this past season. His versatility running the ball, receiving and even throwing the ball (1 Passing TD) showed the skill he has. Not to mention his return skills being second to none in the college game. Spiller will be a dynamic addition to any team and make their offense dangerous.

Weaknesses: At 5'11" and 195 Spiller doesn't have the prototypical "big back" build that many teams look for. Although he wasn't an oft-injured back in college teams may be cautiousas to the wear and tear his body would have to take. Also, Spiller will have to show that he can block for his QB, otherwise he won't be on the field in many passing situations, which will not allow him to showcase his receiving skills.

Reminds me of: Maurice Jones-Drew

Best Fit: Bucs, Redskins, Texans

Projection: Top 15

2. Jonathan Dwyer (GT)
Strengths: At 5'11 and 235 lbs. Dwyer is the type of back which many teams drool over; powerful yet quick. Dwyer racked up almost 1,400 yards and 10+ TDs last season helping GT advance to the Orange Bowl. He was an integral part of their option attack. The scary thing to ponder is that he put up those numbers in an offense where he didn't get an overwhelming majority of the calls on running plays. The kid has a bright future.

Weaknesses: Dwyer will have to show that he can be a servicable back in the passing game with blocking and catching. He was never able to showcase that in college and you can be sure that teams will poke and prod this aspect of his game at the combine. If he can perform well he can assure himself a draft choice in the top 20.

Reminds me of: Michael Turner

Best Fit: Texans, Chargers, Patriots, Browns

Projection: Late 1st - Early 2nd

3. Anthony Dixon (Miss. St.)

Strengths: At 6'1" and 245 he is the big boy of this years draft class, and he has athleticism as well....
Anytime you have that size/athleticism combo, with a 5+ YPC, almost 1,400 yards and 10+ TD you are going to turn heads. With 42 TD's in his career, Dixon has a knack to sniff out the endzone and teams will certainly hope that translates to the NFL. Leading the SEC in rushing is no easy achievement either.

Weaknesses: With his size Dixon isn't going to burn anyone running downfield and he more than likely will have trouble changing direction easily. His prior DUI and questionable work ethic will make some teams shy away and pass on a gifted runner. The boom or bust pick of the RB crop.

Reminds me of: Jonathan Stewart

Best Fit: Vikings (if Chester Taylor leaves), Jaguars, Patriots, Browns

Projection: 2nd-3rd Round

4. Joe McKnight (USC)

Strengths: Speedy and elusive he will give many defenders issues when they go to tackle him one-on-one. He can cut and move on a dime and hits holes with ferocity. He can see the field well coming throught the line and can catch the ball out of the backfield with regularity.

Weaknesses: The investigations into inpropriety will hurt him. He doesn't have Reggie Bush stats to make teams cast aside those indiscretions. He never really lived up to the hype at SC and impressed running the ball consistently. He also runs a little too upright and doesn't show great ball security.

Reminds me of: Reggie Bush... the New Orleans version

Best Fit: Seahawks, Patriots, 49ers, Packers

Projection: Late 2nd - Mid 3rd

5. Toby Gerhart (Stanford)

Strengths: Gerhart had an amazing season (5+ YPC, 20+ TDs) and almost won the Heisman. Although he doesn't have blazing speed he is a true north-south runner who hits and likes to be hit. Gerhart's game gets better the longer the game goes on and the more carries he gets. Toward the end of the season Harbaugh kept giving him the ball and it worked (see Notre Dame game). Gerhart will flourish in the NFL if used in short yardage packages or to compliment a speedy RB.

Weaknesses: Gerhart doesn't have the speed to elude many defeneders and can be caught from behind. Some wonder if he should have stayed another year to show consitency by putting up the same numbers this upcoming season. He can hit all day but in the NFL that doesn't make for a long career, so he will have to work on other parts of his game to ensure sustainability.

Reminds me of: "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell, have to get my Browns comparison in at some time... and no, that's not just because he's a white RB or anything, at least I didn't say Brock Forsey...

Best Fit: Browns, Bucs, Steelers, Bears

Projection: 3rd Round

Sleeper

LaGarrette Blount (Oregon) - If not for the "punch heard 'round the world" in the opening game we may be talking about Blount being a 1st rounder. He didn't play much during the 2009 season and that has to hurt in some regards. However, he has shown that he may be past the incident and has worked on his character issues. Some team will get a late-round bargain getting this kid who could be something special.

There you have it, folks. The best of the best in the 2010 NFL Draft RB class. There is a little bit of everything with this class (speed and power). The task will be to get the best of both. Until next time, be careful out there!

Mr. Yoder I's Ones to Watch

Stafon Johnson (USC) - One of the best stories in this year's draft considering his career and general health were in serious jeopardy after a freak weightlifting accident. He'll certainly have rust as well as talent that teams covet. He was the best all-around back in his time at USC, but didn't get a ton of carries because of the abundance at that position. If he does well at the combine, someone might take a chance in the 4th or 5th round and be rewarded.

Javhid Best (Cal)
-Best has 1st round capabilities, but durability must be a concern. At times he lit up college football this season with his speed and elusivity. His scary head injury and slight frame might scare off teams. Seeing Reggie Bush's role in New Orleans might slot Best as a tweener RB/WR in the NFL. He might not have the frame to be an every round back, but teams in desperate need of playmakers should give him a look. If he stays healthy, he's as good as Dwyer or Spiller.

Mr. Yoder II's Two Points

Dexter McCluster (Ole Miss) - Like Best, McCluster would fit nicely somewhere as a situational back ala Darren Sproles in San Diego. With his performances at the Senior Bowl he has been rocketing up draft boards. And with the success of another pure speed back (Chris Johnson) expect some team to take a chance on McCluster early in the draft. He could very well be a 2nd round pick that would be a good additional weapon for a playoff team like Minnesota or Cincinnati.

Ryan Mathews (Fresno St) - Mathews has the physical attributes and playmaking ability that can make him a contributor from Day 1 as a probable 2nd round pick. He won't be a starter right away, but is polished enough to be the 1A type of back that rookies Donald Brown, LeSean McCoy, and Shonn Greene were this past year. Remember Matt Forte's rookie year? So do Bears fans like me. Don't worry I'm sure Mike Martz will establish the run in Chicago next year, le sigh. Anyways, Mathews can have a similarly great rookie season like Forte if he lands in the right spot. Hopefully the rest of the offense doesn't subsequently abandon him in his 2nd season.

7 Things We've Missed From The Olympics

We're into the second week of the Olympics, and it has been exciting thus far. With the hockey and curling approaching the medal rounds, and many memorable performances in the history books, it's time for us to take a look at 7 Things We've Missed from the Olympics so far. This week, we'll take a more detailed look at all of the action from Vancouver as we close out the Winter Games.

1) USA Hockey's Sorta Kinda Miracle
-Yesterday's game was heart-pounding, thrilling, intense, and invigorating. But, anyone saying this upset approaches 1980 needs to be arrested by the Mounties. Remember, these are NHLers beating fellow NHLers. However, the starpower and depth on the Canadian team far outmatches their US counterparts. Last night's stunning 5-3 victory is a microcosm of what the Olympics are all about. It was the best hockey game since last year's Stanley Cup Game 7 between Detroit and Pittsburgh and captivated the whole sporting landscape (at least those of us with access to MSNBC).
Seeing the American team outwork, outhustle, and outphysical the more fancied Canadians was inspiring. Ryan Miller from the Sabres is playing like he's the best goalie in the world and this USA team is full of guys that aren't as talented as Canada or Russia, but can get the job done through their physical, hard-working style. No play typified this USA team, or the American spirit in general (ok, maybe a tad jingoistic) than Ryan Kesler's diving empty net goal to clinch the win. The American victory was huge because it gives them an easy path to the Gold Medal Game - v SUI, v FIN most likely, while Canada and Russia must play in the Quarters. Regardless of which medal the USA ends up with, the men's hockey team has been one of the highlights of the 2012 Games. That makes this seem like more than 12 years ago.

2) Shaun White's Sickness
-The biggest individual highlight was Shaun White's Gold performance in the Men's Snowboard Halfpipe. While the X Games' infiltration into the Winter Games might shock some of the purists, it does add much needed diversity and excitement to the Winter Olympics. Shaun White is the poster boy for the Winter Olympian of the 21st Century. His big air and Double McTwist were absolutely stunning during his celebratory run. Even if you know nothing about snowboarding, you had to have been in awe of his performance.

3) Winning the Cold War
-Nothing gets the juices flowing like some old fashion USA-Russia feuding! While figure skating isn't exactly a sport we follow or even enjoy, Evan Lysacek's Gold Medal comeback to beat Evgeni Plushenko was a cool patriotic moment. Lysacek goes way up in our eyes because Plushenko dared to call him out before the second session for not attempting a quad jump. Lysacek didn't do the quad, but had the better program and well deserved his Gold. Even better than having the USA win the Gold was seeing Plushenko eat his words and sulk on the second podium step while Lysackek grinned from ear to ear. Drago, whoops, I mean Plushenko, was less than graceful in the aftermath...

"If Olympic champion doesn't know how to jump quad … I don't know," Plushenko said after the result. "Now it's not men's skating. Now it's dancing. That's my point."
The point is that you were outskated and lost to the better man. Yo Adrian!

4) Bode & Lindsay
-On the slopes, the anti-drama of Lindsay Vonn's shin failed to capture the imagination like Dwight Freeney's ankle. Nevertheless, Vonn took home a gold to validate her status as the world's top female skiier and can certainly add more medals later this week. For me though, the biggest skiing story is Bode Miller winning Gold in the Men's Super-Combined event. Miller personified everything wrong with the American Olympian once upon a time when he favored partying over winning in 2006. A matured Miller's redemption is one of the top 2010 stories. He won't turn into Drew Brees, but at least he was finally able to achieve a landmark win. These Gold Medals are well deserved for the best American skiiers of all-time.

5) Speed Skating Stories
-Apolo Anton Ohno surpassed the record mark for US Winter Olympians by winning his 7th medal with a Bronze in the 1000m. Make one thing clear, Apolo Ohno is not the Michael Phelps of the Wintertime. Ohno has won only 2 Golds, along with 2 Silvers, and 3 Bronzes. Short track speed skating is cool, and it is a nice accomplishment, but it doesn't change the American Olympic landscape forever. Shani Davis's second Gold medal in the 1000m might change the American Olympic landscape. In 2006, Davis became the first black athlete to win an individual Gold Medal in the Winter Games. That accomplishment means more than most other Olympic medals possibly could. In 2010 though, Davis became one of the great US Winter Olympians regardless of sport or race by repeating his '06 victory.

6) Random Observations
-NBC's Olympic coverage has fallen under question yet again. Important events like Vonn and Miller's Gold Medal runs are on tape delay and the US-Canada hockey classic was live... on MSNBC! The home of Keith Olbermann!! Yuck! Meanwhile, much less important events like Ice Dancing and Biathalon are shown live on NBC throughout the day. Let's not even get into the shoddy work that is their live online coverage (although the links to highlights above are very good).

-With the tragic death of luger Nodar Kumaritashvili, these Olympics were put under a pall from the start. Some bobsledders have even pulled out of the upcoming competitions. The top speeds are thrilling to watch, but the Olympics is not the venue to be walking the tight rope between the ultimate triumph and tragedy. For the sake of the Games, let's hope that these athletes stay safe.

-As we said above, the addition of sports like Snow/Skicross and other extreme sports have helped raise the profile of the Winter Olympics and makes the 2 weeks more enjoyable for Olympic fans. Through Week 1, these are the most enjoyable Winter Olympics I can remember.

7) Curling Central
-Enjoyable if your name is not John Shuster or Debbie McCormick. Curling, which we profiled here, has emerged as the sport du jour amongst many Olympic fans. The fact that we get to see it every day on CNBC and MSNBC is a great thrill for curling fans that show up once every 4 years. Unfortunately, the 2 American teams performed terribly and are on their way to elimination. Men's skip John Shuster blew 4 out of 4 game winning chances to begin the event. You have to feel for Shuster because of all of the negativity on the internet and blogosphere. It's easy to forget that these curlers aren't pros by a long shot. Sadly, we'll have to wait until 2014 for the next US curling medal.

Elsewhere in the competition, the Canadian men and women have looked strong. The third highlight for me of the Olympics so far was watching the Great Britain/Canada men's curling match. GBR skip David Murdoch and Canada skip Kevin Martin had their teams playing at their best and Canada emerged victorious. Reigning world champs GBR has their work cut out to get to the medal round, and even then they may meet unbeaten Canada in the semis.
On the women's side, the Diane Lane of curling, Canadian skip Cheryl Bernard has her team in a 3 way race with Sweden and China as the Gold Medal favorite. The Chinese beat Canada last night and might have the edge with their execution. Currently, Bernard is rebounding by pounding Sweden into submission. For both Canadian teams though, the question is whether they can stand up to the pressure of winning on Canadian soil. It should be great sporting theater over the next week. Only March Madness will be able to cure my post-Olympic curling blues.

2010 NFL Draft Preview - Quarterbacks

With the excitement of the Super Bowl (and the Saints victory) behind us, it's time to look at the increasingly intriguing NFL offseason. One of our great passions has always been the NFL Draft, and it'll be a thrill for us to bring you extensive NFL offseason coverage focusing on the NFL Draft. First up, the top QBs for the Class of 2010. Brother Yohey will help us out with his expertise and his Top 5 QBs heading into the draft. I'll come in with thoughts on some other QBs to watch below, take it away Yohey!

In this entry, I will divulge my list of the top 5 QB's entering this year's Draft. This year will be nowhere close to the 1983 QB Class, nor 2004 for that matter. There are the solid #1 and #2 QB's, followed by a lot of indecision. No indecision here though - forget Mel "Toupee" Kiper or Todd McSham. Brother Yohey is here to give you the only ranking of QB's you will need. Let's Get It on!

1. Sam Bradford (OU)
Strengths: Sam Bradford has started at OU since his freshman year and has grown into an elite FBS QB. Bradford is the most accurate passer in this year's draft. He can make all the throws and anticipates routes very well to put the ball where it needs to go so only his receiver comes down with it. Not to mention he is a Heisman Trophy winner. Working under an offense with pro tendencies will help Bradford develop into a quality QB for the NFL team that selects him. He is a stand up kid who has a tireless work ethic and next to JC QB is the prospect with the highest character.

Weaknesses: Bradford doesn't have a great build for QB. He is somewhat lanky and has an issue with is throwing shoulder that he seems to have overcome, but you never know when Ray Lewis or any defensive player gets a hit on him if it will cause re-injury. Bradford also never really had to play against any team with great defensive speed that he will see in the NFL. There are no SEC defenses in the Big 12 and Bradford will have to overcome that to succeed.

Reminds me of: Peyton Manning.

Best Fit: Rams - Bulger is done and the sooner Knull gets out of uniform the better there for everybody. Steve Spagnuolo will get the chance to put his stamp on this team and get them a young QB to build around. Bradford, Avery and Jackson could be a long lasting relationship for St. Louis try to rekindle the "Greatest Show on Turf."

Projection: Top 5 Pick

2. Jimmy Clausen (ND)
Strengths: Started under Charlie Weis in a Pro-Style offense through and through. Clausen can take the snaps from under center, shotgun, handle the 3-5-7 step drops and get the ball out quickly. He shows good pocket awareness and puts good spin on the ball. I remember watching ND games and being amazed at the ball coming out of his hands; there is nothing better to me than to see a football thrown that has a tight spiral. Clausen has the ability to air the ball out and put it in front of a speedy receiver to run under. A great talent that has limitless potential in the NFL.

Weaknesses: Clausen can throw some beautiful fades, however, they sometimes have too much air under them. He has to get that under control because with fades, the WR can't wait for the ball to come down in the endzone. They have to get it at its highest point and bring it down. Clausen almost has a mechanical way in which he throws; seems forced and not real natural. He also hasn't had the best performances in big games. The only negative against him is his non-physical attributes and Brady Quinn's lack of success from Nore Dame (and it pains me to say this as a Browns fan). Clausen may have those problems and will have to break the Weis curse.

Reminds me of: Philip Rivers.

Best Fit: Not as clean cut as Bradford. He could equally go to Oakland, Washington or Buffalo. JaMarcus Russell is a burnt out bulb and unless Al Davis has gotten more senile he will be gone, Mike Shannahan may fall in love with him but you never know and Buffalo has been hurting for a QB since Jim Kelly left (remember Rob Johnson??!!??). It will all depend with Washington at #4.

Projection: Top 10 Pick

3. Jarrett Brown (WVU)
Strengths: Freakish athletic ability. Brown can move around in the pocket and scramble when he wants to and put the ball out there with some zip to the receivers. Although he only has one year under his belt he made many people remember the days of Pat White, although Brown fits the NFL QB mold more. White is being used in the Wildcat packages, where Brown can get under center and take the snaps every play. Brown can throw the outs with velocity on them and has displayed some nice touch in the intermediate routes. He showed that he could run the South offense in the Senior Bowl and the coaches, you can be assured, took notice.

Weaknesses: Is he this draft's Akili Smith; one year wonder? Time will tell if he is Akili or McNabb but whoever drafts him will have to be patient. Past Bradford and Clausen you aren't getting someone you can plug right in and expect wins. Brown will have to be a project to get more experience under his belt. Teams will have to wonder if his run-first mentality will kick in and he won't have the patience to let plays develops.

Reminds me of: David Garrard

Best Fit: Somewhere where he can sit and develop. Minnesota, Jacksonville and Arizona leap to mind.

Projection: Mid-3rd Round

4. Colt McCoy (UT)

Strengths: The QB in this year's draft with the most experience, which should bode well for Colt. He had to take the reigns of Mack Brown's National Title team after VY left and he did not disapoint. 45 wins during his tenure is exceptional and the kid knows what it takes to be a winner. Colt played big in big games and was one of the best in the FBS when hitting the intermediate throws. The chemistry he had with Jordan Shipley showed the type of QB he can be as well as the type of teammate. Colt is a great character player for any team to have and will be a great locker room addition. The game against Texas A&M showed what Colt can do when a play breaks down and he has to use his feet. He is sufficiently mobile and has great pocket awareness.

Weaknesses: How is the shoulder? That will surely be tested at the combine. Also, Colt is exceptional throwing the intermediate routes but hasn't shown exceptional ability to air the ball out. Teams are going to have to find out if he can hit the WR streaking 40 yards down the field or if he can drop the ball into their hands when they are running up the seam. All the throws that are necessary, Colt is going to have to show he can make.

Reminds me of: Matt Schaub

Best Fit: Tennessee. I know that VY showed his skills this season but can he be trusted to run the team for the next decade? Not only would this bring two of UT's greatest QBs together but will allow Tennessee to let Colt sit and learn while Vince plays, since you never know when something may come up with Vince. If Colt would have to he could step in and take hold, much like he did at UT.

Projection: Late 2nd - Early 3rd

5. Tony Pike (UC)

Strengths: The man who got Brian Kelly to ND takes his game to the NFL. Pike, at 6'6" has no trouble with field vision and watching plays develop. Being able to see over the linemen will be key in his ability to make decisions and adjust to what the defenses are going to throw at him. The game to me that showed Pike's ability to be an NFL QB was against Pittsburgh for the Big East Title. His game winning TD pass to Armon Binns in the endzone made me just say, "wow". This kid could be something special and his rocket arm coupled with his size makes him an alluring prospect for an NFL team.

Weaknesses: I hate, HATE to use two Cleveland Browns QB's for my negatives, but Pike could be the next Derek Anderson. He can sometimes make the most beautiful touch passes and zip that ball in to a tight window but then makes some WTF throws. Anderson has tremendous trouble with the intermediate routes, floating the ball over between the LB and S. Pike may have these troubles and he will have to expand his throwing repertoire and not rely on the heater all the time. His wrist injuries on his non throwing hand leave many to wonder if it will be able to sustain a hit.

Reminds me of: Derek Anderson

Best Fit: Cincinnati. Palmer is regressing and hasn't been the same since the Kimo hit in '05. Palmer probably has 3-4 years left and that would be sufficient time to allow Pike to sit and learn for the hometown team.

Projection: Early-Mid 3rd

Brother Yohey Sleeper: Mike Kafka (NU)

There's just something about this kid. He can run the spread but during the Senior Bowl took snaps under center and displayed a great ability to handle that. His intellect coupled with is athleticism he will be something to watch. He won't go any sooner than the mid-5th round but he will be a find for any NFL team he lands with. Seems to have a Tom Brady-esque quality to him.

This class is no 1983 or 2004 class like I stated before but it beats the 2005 draft class. Besides the top two it is a toss up but there are some diamonds in the rough to be found.

Mr. Yoder I's Ones To Watch

Tim Tebow (FLA) - Duhh!! While he's not in Yohey's Top 5, Tebow will have all the attention on him at draft day. The experts pick apart his technique and ability to translate to the pro game, but the guy has off the chart intangibles. One note about Tebow is that he succeeded against the vaunted SEC defenses that are always touted ad nauseum. Yet, that's conveniently forgotten in Tebow's case - folks say he won't be able to handle fast NFL defenses with his delivery flaws, but he did for 4 years at Florida. Make no mistake, somebody will take a chance on him in Round 1 (maybe via trade) thinking that Tebow can be the next Drew Brees - an unbelievable leader with physical limitations, but one who gets the job done. With everyone picking against him, he has the will to succeed.

Dan LeFevour (CMU) -
The all-time FBS TD leader and the under the radar QB of this year's draft (Jarrett Brown aside, Yohey!). Yes, it's LeFevour and not Tebow who is the all-time TD leader at 150. News came today that LeFevour wouldn't throw at the combine, which might hurt his draft stock slightly. The CMU gunslinger impressed as a Senior Bowl MOP and has all of the physical tools necessary. LeFevour is in that McCoy/Pike category of 2nd-3rd round picks that could provide a huge return if given the right situation. Some might look at these QBs like LeFevour as "system guys" but it would be a mistake to not give a chance to QBs that have produced so much in college. If a team like Seattle or Arizona gives LeFevour a chance to learn the pro game, he could be a future Pro Bowler.

That's it for our look at the QBs for the Class of 2010, and with USA curling piling up the wins and USA-Canada hockey tomorrow, we'll check back with our Olympic coverage very soon here at RSS!

Yoders' Live Blog - Tiger's News Conference

The world will stop at 11 AM this morning where Tiger Woods holds a "news conference" without any questions. And what better occasion for the return of the live blog! He'll make a statement into a camera and not take any questions. We'll try and pick out the important messages of Woods' statement and translate Tiger. Will Elin be absent? Will fellow golfers be there? Will Tiger actually show remorse and emotion? Are the rumors true about Michael Jordan showing up?!? Everything you need to know about El Tigre's return to the public light live at RSS!

FINAL THOUGHTS

Y2: It was a very uneven statement, at times contrite and somewhat human, other times robotic, other times angry and indignant that his wall of privacy has been broken. But, the big question out of this is will Tiger ever be the same golfer he was before? After 45+ days of rehab... maybe missing the Masters... can he ever be the same? For the first time his surpassing of Nicklaus isn't a sure thing.

Y1: I was surprised that Tiger addressed the 9 iron rumors, the Accenture tournament, his behavior on the course, and the sex rehab. Tiger was surprisingly open and apologized to a number of different people. He appeared to open up, even talking about his spirituality. He did apologize directly to the fans. But, we still saw flashes of the old Tiger - the coldness, still holding onto what's left of his privacy, attacking the media, etc. It doesn't look like Tiger is ready to come back to golf any time soon. The Masters better prepare for life without Tiger.

I'm not surprised at the tears and glowing nature of the postgame reports on the sports networks. They need Tiger back at the top as much as anyone, and unbiased journalism is dying across the country anyways. It was a B- from Tiger. He said what he needed to say and was more open about his past. As he said, he will be judged by his behavior going forward. The Tiger Woods comeback is just beginning and will dominate the sports landscape in 2010. I wonder what Brett Favre will do to reclaim the spotlight...

POSTGAME

11:27 - Good Lord! Now Hannah Storm looks like she's tearing up on the air! What the F*&^ is going on here?? "Such a touching moment after... the embrace" as he hugs his mother. He's not dying of cancer people, he ran into a fire hydrant and got caught banging porn stars!

11:25 - Brandel Chamblee on Golf Channel saying we can expect Tiger on the course within 3-4 months and that Tom Watson's comments of etiquette hit home. Golf Channel not surprisingly calling it a "home run." Would you expect the Golf Channel to criticize Tiger Woods? Would ESPN criticize Tim Tebow and Urban Meyer?

11:24 - Broadcast networks off the air. Fox showing some replays talking about a difference of opinions regarding the statement. Not surprsingly, Fox straight shooting here, they're fair and balanced, right?

11:20 - Some egghead on MSNBC talking about Tiger taking his time during the press conference and coming off sincere. Jim Gray also slurping up what we just heard on Golf Channel. We've heard reports of someone crying on the Golf Channel as well, that'd be hilarious.

11:17 - Andy North saying it's not different than what we expected. Reilly says it was really from the heart (I guess he didn't see the ice cold stares and defensiveness). David Feherty on CBS thinks that Tiger & Elin will reconcile and talks about underestimating Tiger Woods as an "extraordinary human being." Ummm... no.

NEWS CONFERNCE

11:15 - "I ask you to find room in your heart to one day believe in me again." A sniff as he leaves the podium and hugs his mother. An awkward silence in the room. And that's a wrap! A ton of interesting dynamics here.

11:13 - This is really interesting, Tiger now talking about his Buddhist beliefs. OK, maybe this is a new Tiger after all. "Starting tomorrow I will leave for more treatment and more therapy." Thanks the players and Accenture for understanding of the timing. Talks about needing to regaining spiritual balance and relying on others for help.

"I do plan to return to golf one day, I just don't know when that day will be. I don't rule out that it will be this year. When I do return, I need to make my behavior more respectful of the game." Folks, that's what golfers and golf fans needed to hear, but it doesn't sound like Tiger is coming back anytime soon.

11:11 - Tiger, now is not the time to attack the media and sound like a victim! "Please leave my wife and kids alone!" Wow!

11:09 - Surprised he has said "sorry" so much, would've lost that prop bet. Says he's been in rehab for 45 days and he has a "long way to go." Marriage issues are between Elin and he... so it looks like Tiger will return to his shell when this is over? Although he is trying to sound remorseful, it looks like the same old Tiger...

11:08 - Y2: He looks so uncomfortable... voice going up and down... looking to and from the camera, awkward pauses, he looks like Colin Montgomerie trying to win a major.

11:07 - He does sound contrite and apologetic so far, but doesn't this sound a little intense and stern for an apology? Still hasn't spoken directly to the fans yet.

11:05 - Whoa! Going right into the rumors of domestic violence! And now sounding angry about those rumors! This is coming out of nowhere, and an icy stare into the camera like it's Phil Mickelson!

11:04 - Talking about business partners, sponsors, etc. at the moment. Sounds like a State of the Union address at the moment! "Let you down" leading the word count by the second.

11:03 - "Elin and I have started discussing the damage caused by my behavior" - looks like the marriage may be getting back together. Again going out of the way to keep privacy.

11:02 - It's go time! Sadly, no scars from a 9 iron to the head

11:00 - How 'bout some prop bets on the verge of the most infamous statement in sports history!
UNDER Tiger saying sorry 5.5 times
3/2 Tiger says "family" the most
EVEN Tiger doesn't announce his specific return date
-260 Tiger doesn't wipe a tear

PREGAME

10:58 - Andy North commenting on American society. Talking about Tiger's statement making more news than stuff that really matters. As we have a PIP showing Tiger's presidential podium currently on ESPN. This might be the most exciting and bizarre live blog in the history of Randall Simon's Sausages.

10:55 - Finally we see the timeline on ESPN. CNN covering Lysacek v Plushenko (we'll talk Olympics this weekend), MSNBC and Fox with talking heads, nothing yet from broadcast networks

10:52 - Funny that only now are we hearing criticism of Woods' on-course antics, which trouble greats of the game (like Tom Watson who recently spoke out) more than anything. His swearing and club throwing disrespect the history of the game, but nobody noticed before. That will be one thing to watch if and when Tiger comes back. Y2: If fans heckle Tiger will they throw condoms at him ala the syringes at Barry Bonds? Will we finally see Steve Williams go Brock Lesnar on a patron??

10:50 - I think CNN has a guy reporting at a Damon's

10:48 - College Gameday commercial - honestly, outside of John Wall and UK, what has happened this college bball season? Has this not been one of the most underwhelming bball seasons in a long time? At least the regular season will mean more with a 457 team tournament.

10:45 - Colleen Dominguez at the Accenture Match Play, wait there's golf tournaments going on? Our other least favorite sports journalist Colin Cowherd now talking about whether or not Tiger will cry. "Because he's educated, educated people tend to be more educated than Cooter (mocking redneck voice)... educated people look inside." So Tiger will cry because he's an intellectual?? Great analysis. This is why I'm boycotting this moron like the Golf Writers Association of America. You know, if Tiger is so educated... why sleep around and cost yourself millions of dollars and your position as the most popular athlete on the planet?? Oh yea, sorry, that's actually using my brain to analyze things...

10:40 - Checking in on the major cable news networks...
CNN - Student shot at NIU, Tiger's apology among top stories
MSNBC - Is Rush Limbaugh the leader of the GOP? (For the liberal network, MSNBC's love affair with Rush Limbaugh is bizarre, he appears more on their network than Keith Olbermann)
Fox - Live on the scene at Sawgrass
*Evidently all 3 broadcast networks will also break into programming with the news conference

10:36 - Interesting that we are hearing Tiger Woods is still in "rehab" and not "sex rehab." It's a big difference in the public light to leave out . Steve Philips was in sex rehab and he's universally thought of as a sleazy creep. But is sex rehab more seemly or more sympathetic than alcohol or drug rehab? Will the public see it as a man fighting a true addiction, or a guy who got caught sleeping around and wants to protect his image? Coming back from sex rehab is not a bridge the sports world has crossed before.

10:34 - Is Rick Reilly trying out for The Marriage Ref now? Save the marriage advice for the professionals... like Alec Baldwin and Jerry Seinfeld!

10:32 - The unofficial 1/2 hour pregame starts with... Rick Reilly, great. I read Reilly's "column" on curling this past week. If anyone is mailing it in for a big paycheck it is this guy. He's like the Jerome James of ESPN.
