Tiger Woods News Conference Live Blog

Postgame Thoughts

Tiger's Grade - B+
-His atmosphere was so much better here than any time we've seen him in public since this all went down. He was so relaxed it was shocking - but was he too relaxed? For me, the thing that stuck out was his comments about chasing Nicklaus' record. "If I win championships along the way, so be it." That was stunning. Of course, it could go either way - he relaxes and plays the best golf of his life, or he becomes too relaxed and turns into Pedro Cerrano of Major League II. Tiger's got a long way to go to repair his public image, but he seems committed to being a new person and making the most of his second chance.

The Media - C
-There were a couple softballs lobbed up, but overall the media did a solid job of asking the tough questions about rehab, PEDs, etc. However, I would have loved to see the media press Woods when he gave the typical "police report" or "it's personal" responses. They also seemed to happy to dance around the subject of sex rehab and fell into Tiger's hands. All in all, an average performance.

Barack Obama - D-
-He puts on a White Sox cap throwing out the first pitch in DC??? And his throw was terrible. Clark Kellogg would have probably put it in the dugout.

Sorry, had to comment on that. Anyways, we learned a lot from this press conference. Tiger's demeanor on the course will be the next thing to watch. Honestly, anybody trying to predict Tiger's performance this week at Augusta is guessing. All possibilities are in play. If he smiles his way to 75-74 and misses the cut I won't be surprised. If he contends like recent years without giving a scare I won't be surprised. If he breaks the course record it won't be a shock.

Thanks for joining us for another live blog. Check our Twitter feed at the upper right of the page for our National Title Game thoughts. Bye for now...

2:44 - Tirico and Rinaldi note that there wasn't a lot of anger in the room. Not great postgame coverage, I can't wait for Rick Reilly's glowing tribute. Looks like it's time to wrap up...

2:39 - It's fun to see ex-pro golfers try to play psychiatrists on TV. Only In America!!

2:37 - Andy North and Curtis Strange cite sincerity and relief for Tiger. The over/under on number of people crying is .5

2:36 - And it ends. We'll stick with the postgame coverage and analyze the analysis of a 30+ question press conference. Already we start with a double take from Tirico, lol.

2:35 - "It's all been stripped away and here I am... and it's fun again."

2:33 - It's weird to hear everyone just throw around rehab, and all of these terms that go along with it without addressing that it was sex rehab that Tiger was in. It's a giant bikini-dressed elephant in the room.

2:31 - Now we're into the hardcore golf questions. Did someone give the signal to stop the sex, drugs, and scandal questions? I would just love it if Martha Burke came out of nowhere and nailed Tiger in the back of the head with a steel chair. We need some more drama in this thing.

2:30 - The first chuckle from Tiger calling out an extremely long-winded question. Just slightly awkward.

2:27 - Great question about viewing Nicklaus' record differently, and for the first Time Tiger takes a slight pause. "It's not about the championships, it's about how you live your life... and I needed to change that." "Going forward, I need to be a better man." "If I win championships along the way, so be it." THAT is THE headline from the sporting world coming out of this. Is Tiger's drive to win still there? Who knows!

2:25 - That's followed by the Oprah how did you fool so many people question which allows a full mea culpa and right into a question about Tiger's legacy. You can almost sense the tide in the room to shift to a very sympathetic tone on the spot.

2:24 - I would have answered that ridiculous question this way - "Yes, I wanted to get caught, ruin my pristine reputation, and bring down my empire. Yes, I wanted to get caught." Dumb. D U M dumb.

2:23 - Wow. He talks openly about missing his son's first birthday in rehab. As most expected, Elin will not be at Augusta and talks about his return being a family decision. TMZ is crushed.

2:20 - Good question about Tiger's comeback date with regards to his statement in February. That man looked in no way shape or form ready for Augusta. Tiger cites working with Hank Haney as bringing back his zeal for the game. I'm sensing Season 3 of the Haney Project - Tiger & Hank Go To Sex Rehab!

2:18 - I don't think the constant affairs were the cause of his loss to YE Yang at the PGA Championship. If anything, they probably helped him on the course! Hello!

2:16 - Still very vague about exactly what type of rehab Tiger was in Mississippi for. There it is! I believe he answered that question with "That's personal" - so... he's not admitting to sex rehab. I guess he and Steve Phillips aren't going on tour together anytime soon, shucks.

2:14 - 1st prescription drug question - Tiger says he has taken them because of his knee injuries... and also was on medication when his dad died, no mention of addiction or treatment. No real surprises so far, except for how relaxed Tiger looks. I'm really stunned by how different he looks compared to when we last saw him in public.

2:12 - 1st softball question about how he feels being out there from Steve ____ (sorry couldn't get the last name)... CBS and Augusta are going to pull out all the stops to make this seem like Ben Hogan's comeback - make no mistake about it. We're going to see 100% positive coverage this week from most of the major media outlets and Augusta.

2:11 - 1st PED question... this is a big test... he flatly says that he never gave him any PEDs. Tiger's not getting caught in a giant sex scandal and a performance enhancing drug scandal within a year people... then again, we never thought we'd see Tiger in a giant sex scandal...

2:10 - "The fact that I've won golf tournaments is irrelevant" "I'm going to have to explain all this to them" "Winning golf tournaments is irrelevant to all the damage I've caused." Wow.

2:09 - "I'm going to try to not get as hot when I play" "I've made a conscious decision to try to tone down my negative outbursts" sounds like we'll have a neutered Tiger on the golf course. Sorry for all the people that expect Tiger to get booed off Augusta National. He might as well be Cal Ripken playing in Baltimore... 2 Cal Ripken references in 20 minutes... hey give me a break we're live!

2:05 - Here we go! 1st question... 5 stitches in his lip is a new detail... followed his lawyers advice... talking about finding strength and peace inside. Again going to the well trying to defend his family's privacy.

2:04 - Good opening statement to put his fellow players first. Tiger looks so much more relaxed in this setting than either the 5 minute interview or his public statement. Heck, he's even smiling!

2:02 - OK, forget that... Tiger is taking the podium at 2:02 sporting a scary new goatee... or goat as Jim Rome would say.

2:00 - And here we go to Mike Tirico. The ads said the news conference starts at 2. The over/under on the actual start time will be more like 2:24.

1:49 - Currently watching regular 30 min ESPNEWS. JW Stewart is like the Cal Ripken of ESPNEWS, always coming to play every day. What an inspiring figure.

Another day. Another Tiger Woods News Conference Live Blog. Last time, we gave you the play by play of his prepared statement. Today promises to be a little more exciting now that Tiger will actually answer questions from reporters. My guess we'll hear the words "private", "Elin and me", and "police report" more than anything. Oh well, it's always fun to translate Tiger!

McNabb Trade Winners & Losers

Wow. So much going on in the world of sports. Donovan McNabb is a Redskin? We knew #5 would get traded, but to a division rival just down I-95? It's a trade that will shake the landscape of the NFL. It not only affects two of the marquee franchises in the league, but it will send echoes throughout the league and the upcoming draft. So, who are the winners and losers in the trade of Donovan McNabb?

Winners

Redskins/Mike Shanahan - Any time you can strengthen yourselves while weakening the opposition it's a good thing. The Skins are always in a win now mode, and this move is no different. Mike Shanahan also gets an Elwayesque QB (yes, the comparisons to McNabb and Elway at this point of their careers is already beginning) to try and lead the Skins to the Super Bowl... but Terrell Davis isn't walking through that door. I wouldn't be too bullish on the Redskins. They still have a triumvirate of aging backs, a weak WR corps, and a battered O-Line. It will improve Washington dramatically, but maybe not enough to get in the playoffs.

Kevin Kolb - He's the man in Philly now. Two words: good. luck. All of this for a guy who has made 2 career NFL starts? Hey, at least he's more accomplished than Charlie Whitehurst. I will say I watched Kolb's start in Week 2 against New Orleans this past season, and he can throw the pig - 31/51 for 391 yards 2TD 3 INT. It might be a rocky learning curve in a tough town to learn on the job, but Kolb has the goods. It's a good move for the Eagles because it will help long term while not crippling them in the present.

Russell Okung - If you aren't the 4th pick in the draft by the Skins, then something is wrong. This trade takes Jimmy Clausen out of the picture, and even the most amateur of draftniks knows that Washington should look towards the O-Line and Okung is the best prospect in this year's draft. Mark the first 4 picks down already - Bradford, Suh, McCoy, Okung.

JaMarcus Russell - You get another chance to be the starter in Oakland. If this report is accurate, you might have found a new way to blow your chance and be the biggest bust of all-time, literally and figuratively.

Losers

Jason Campbell - A guy that never really got a fair shake in Washington. Campbell has had system upon system and coach upon coach laid upon him in DC and never found success. A bad Easter Sunday for JC, who now might have to resurrect his career somewhere else. A change of scenery would be best for Campbell, but I don't know if he'll ever be a great QB. His career record is 15-39 and his QB rating is a mediocre 82.3. He may be traded this offseason, hard to see him sit behind McNabb for an extended period of time.

The Reid/McNabb Era - The Reid/McNabb Era ends after 11 years in Philly. Can you believe it was that long?? And yet, it ends without a championship. Reid has a 108-67 record in Philly, 1 Super Bowl appearance, and 5 NFC Championship Game appearances with #5 at QB. McNabb is arguably a borderline Hall of Famer considering his run in Philly. Its longevity and amount of success is remarkable considering the parity in the NFL. But, the Reid/McNabb Era will be known for its failure to win big games - 0-1 in SB, 1-4 in NFC Champ. History will no doubt view Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb together, for better and worse.

Jimmy Clausen - Sorry boy wonder. You're the odd man out now come draft day. With Clausen not going at #4 to a QB obsessed Mike Shanahan, the brash Notre Dame triggerman might start a slide down draft boards. Unless Buffalo, Cleveland, or Jacksonville take Clausen in the Top 10 (unlikely considering each situation and their draft history) - he might fall to the bottom third of R1. Can't you picture Tim Tebow trying to settle down Clausen throwing temper tantrums in the green room during the 1st Round? Now that'd be great TV.

Philly Fans - But, the ultimate losers are Philly fans themselves. First, because they booed #5 from Day 1 and never embraced McNabb for any number of reasons. Forget the title of this video, this was idiocy at its best.

Second, because Philly never appreciated how good they had it. Now that he's gone, Philly fans are celebrating? This report claims 70% of Eagles fans calling in to talk radio in the Iladelph are happy with trading McNabb. Hopefully, poetic justice can be served and McNabb squashes the Eagles at the Linc next season to a chorus of boos that he heard his entire career. The way McNabb was treated in Philly was disgraceful. It was Philly fans at their worst. Nothing against Kevin Kolb, but if the Eagles can't crack .500 for the next decade - then Philly fans will get a team worthy of their treatment. And yes, it's just another excuse for me to share with you the picture below.

2010 MLB Awards

The RSS Oracle has returned from his NFL scouting duties to bestow award predictions for the 2010 MLB Season. At least one of us has the Phightin Phills headed back to the top. Remember, you can take these to the bank:

AL MVP - Joe Mauer (MIN)
With his new contract to stay a Twin finished Mauer will show why he is the $100+ million dollar man in the Twin Cities. Mauer will continue to tear through the oppisition, hitting for .340+, 30+ HR and 120+ RBI. Although catcher is not the flashy or sexy position in baseball Mauer will make it by the end of his career and he will help power the Twins to a division title.

NL MVP - Hanley Ramirez (FLA)
Ramirez is the most dynamic player in the NL East and possibly all of MLB. Ramirez hit well over .300 last season and shows no reason why that should stop. If you were ranking players for fantasy baseball he would be the top player selected by many, or if not, top 2. Ramirez will continue to put up numbers that exceed .300, 30 HR and 100+ RBI which will make the Marlins a contender in the NL East/Wild Card picture.

AL Cy Young - Cliff Lee (SEA)
NL Cy Young - Roy Halladay (PHI)
You see a correlation with the Cy Young picks? The biggest trade this offseason will reap dividends for both teams and would be the first time in MLB history that two players involved in the same trade went on the win the CY Young award for their new teams. Halladay, much like Lee last season, will buzzsaw through NL hitting and put up great numbers.

Lee has the grace of playing in the AL West against the Lackey-less Angels, the up and coming Rangers and A's (who stuipdly released Cust today). Lee should put up great numbers in the AL and working with King Felix will lead the Mariners to the AL West crown. Put Don Wakamatsu down at Manager of the Year and Jack Zduriencik down as Executive of the Year.

AL ROY - Brian Matsuz (BAL)
A team who has nothing to play for Matsuz will provide excitement and hope for the Oriole faithful who wish for a great season. He is the only bright spot for the 2nd worst team near the Potomac.

NL ROY - Jason Heyward (ATL)
Heyward is the next great thing in baseball and will light things up in the ATL for a great while. A dynamic OF with great potential Heyward will patrol the OF for the Braves like no on has done in the past. Expect great things from this kid and the ROY will only start his collection of accolades.

World Series - Phillies over Twins in 6
Mauer's new contract shows commitment in the organization and if in contention they will make a move to shore up the pitching rotation to make a push towards their first World Series since 1991. Halladay will mow through the NL and only improve on what Lee's addition did for the team last year. In the end, Philly wins their 2nd in 3 years to establish themselves as a mini-dynasty.

Yoder's World Series Picks
Y1: Yankees over Phillies in 7
If anything, these two teams ahve only further cemented their status as the two best team sin their respective leagues. Roy Halladay will dominate the NL, but I still don't know who else will win games in October for this team against the Yanks. As Yohey expects the Twins to make a move, we all know that it will be the Yankees to add the extra arm or two to take them back to the top. It should be another great Series, but I'm going with the Yanks to repeat.

Y2: Yankees over Phillies in 6
If the Phils had the guts to keep both Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, this would be a slam dunk for Philly in this World Series rematch. Clearly, no other teams in either league have made the types of upgrades to get past these Eastern powerhouses. In the AL, the Yankees threats for the pennant are from their own division, the Red Sox and the Rays. However, they both have their deficiencies in their lineup and pitching respectively. In the NL, it's pretty much a poo poo platter behind the Phils, unless the Cards are healthy in October, an unlikely scenario. So, unfortunately for baseball fans in flyover country, it's going to be another year of the Evil Empire at the top.

Alright folks, there you have it. The players this season who we all will be talking about at the end. I am so happy that the pasttime has begun and will be in attendance at Great American Ballpark tomorrow to see my Redlegs vanquish the despised Cardinals and Chris Carpenter. This the Brother Yohey, as the great Joe Nuxhall once said, rounding third and heading for home. Good day, folks.

Final Four Live Blog - Duke vs West Virginia

FINAL THOUGHTS

3 Stars
1) Singler, Scheyer, Smith - The Big 3 for Duke combined for 63 points. It was simply a masterclass performance.
2) Bob Huggins - The compassion shown for his injured superstar was as real as sports gets.
3) Da'Sean Butler - A tragic end to his WV career, but he has a lot to be proud of during his time in Morgantown.

Final Thoughts - Well, that was about what we expected. A game that was dominated by Duke. But, at least we didn't get the greatness of high and mighty Duke jammed down our throats. CBS did a great job keeping the adoration to a minimum during the game broadcast. I hope that Monday's broadcast will be short of the hyperbole that we'll hear ad nauseum over the next two days. I sure as heck didn't have Butler and Duke in the finals. It's the fitting end to one of the maddest Marches we've seen in a long time. Thanks for joining us for our Final 4 live blog. Bye for now...

2nd Half
*OK, let's cut through the crap and give a couple thoughts on the title game before our Monday pick, here's how Butler might be able to beat the Dukies...

1) Butler will be a huge underdog... but don't be surprised to see a close game. Butler will have to play a slow it up style because Duke doesn't have the capability to get out and run.
2) Duke will most likely crush Butler on the offensive glass. It's going to take a masterclass of boxing out to stay competitive on the boards. No 2nd chance points for Duke.
3) Butler's going to have to match Duke shot for shot - Duke shot 52% in the Semis... Butler 30%. If that happens Monday it'll be a replay of last year.

Final Score - Duke 78 WVU 57

2:07 - That's never stopped Duke from running up the score... 75-57

2:40 - Duke up 15 and we've now entered Gar-Bage time. Bleh.

3:39 - We had to wait 21 seconds for Clark to refer to it as a David v Goliath matchup.

*Seriously though, I hope race isn't a factor in the pregame hype. Both teams have more white dudes than we're accustomed to seeing on the national stage, but that doesn't and shouldn't have anything to do with the game, the analysis, or anything else. Of course, I'll expect all of the typical stereotypes to be thrown out there in the prelude to the title game.

As much as I (and 85% of sports fans) dislike Duke, give them credit for getting to the finals by having Smith, Scheyer, and Singler play career-best bball. Similarly, Butler is playing the best team ball of the tournament and has beat Syracuse, Kansas State, and Michigan State on the way to the Finals.

4:00 - This is the WVU team I expected to see against UK. Announcers are right that this is Duke's best game of the tourney by far. Time to hit the exits in Indy and watch the sports world drool over the Great White Hope against the Great White Hype! Butler vs Duke! Monday night!

5:50 - Scheyer to the hoop. He has no moves. He looks like he's going in slow motion. But, he finds a way to get to the basket and get lay-ins. There's no physical explanation for his success. This is why we hate Duke. They cheat by using Flubber.

*Interesting to see the Twitter world talk about the Huggins/Butler scene. Established media types saying it's one of the most touching scenes they've ever seen. Rest of the world talking about awkward closeness and intimacy. I guess I'll lean towards the former... although the sophomoric college side of me goes with the latter. Come on, I'm out of school. That was an awesome player/coach moment.

*Duke's Big 3 now 19/37, 10/18 3PT, and 55 pts combined. That's the story of the game right now.

7:07 - Huggy with a timeout down 15. Smith now has 19 for the game. Maybe we can get UConn's women's team out here to try and beat the Dukies.

8:12 - Butler being carted to the back. Looks like a bad ending for one of WVU's finest.

8:59 - Good Lord. Duke is not this good. 63-48. I'm officially in denial... Butler now on the floor writhing in pain. Replay shows what could be a bad left knee injury. Huggins is now on the loor consoling Butler in what could be a touching scene if he wasn't so awkwardly close to his face. This looks bad. At this point you hope it doesn't affect his future career in the NBA.

10:06 - You want to know the best way to play bad defense? A) Allow easy shots from the perimeter. B) When said shots are missed, allow offensive rebounds and second chances to the opposition. WVU is executing this plan perfectly.

11:14 - Ironically, if anything, the refs are keeping West Virginia in this game. Eh, whatever. I'll give up on the Duke hate for the year. I've still got a Saints Super Bowl to celebrate and not even a Duke title can ruin that.

11:44 - A Class B technical? I knew I should have brought my NCAA rulebook to watch the game!

11:44 - HOLY CRAP! A technical foul called on Duke for one of the Plumlees hanging on the rim... Smith holds his private parts as our pops comments, "He must have got hit in the nuts." That's the highlight of this game thus far.

12:11 - Nolan Smith is showin the scouts something tonight. Nice drive to the bucket to go to the line. He looks like he could be a combo guard off the bench in the Association. WVU in trouble down 12 and now turning the ball over consistently.

13:00 - Nolan Smith. Is. A. Knock down. Shooter. Someone mail this telegram to the guy in the sweatsuit standing on the sidelines.

14:11 - Right on cue CBS. The Dookies haven't shot a free throw yet tonight. They're living on the outside game. *Mental note - already dreaming of scenarios where Butler wins Monday night including Celtic Pride-esque kidnapping scheme* It's a movie people, take it easy.

14:42 - "Zoubs" finally called for an over the back foul. Unfortunately, no ref conspiracies tonight. There's always Monday Duke-hating universe!

*Here's a good piece from the NY Daily News that is pro-Gus. 49-40 Duke. Hey, I'm trying to cope with an eventual Duke title, bear with me.

*The best I could find is a Facebook group. 17 members?!?! You can do better sports fans and Facebook!!

16:09 - Tell me again why you would leave Nolan Smith standing wide open at the 3 point line? Maybe after 8 3 point makes Huggy will want to guard him.

16:35 - Good drive from Butler to try and get in rhythm offensively. Is it just me or has the crowd and atmosphere seemed dead all night? Nantz and Kellogg's drab commentary hasn't helped matters. I feel like I'm watching a midseason game instead of a national semifinal. Is there a Gus Johnson petition out there somewhere to bring him to the Final 4??

17:30 - Smith hits an important 3 to keep WVU within single digits. The Neer's defense has been losing guys all night, they'll need to keep Duke at or below 40% this half to have some hope.

18:38 - That was one of the more awkward loose ball scrambles I can remember seeing. Much like the 1st game, this seems much larger than an 8 point lead for the Dookies.

19:30 - Does anyone notice the weird design on the back of Duke's uniforms? Can't make it out what it is but saw kinda a similar thing with UK. Good sign with Mazzula finding the first bucket of the half.

20:00 - WVU has to do 3 things - 1) Get Da'Sean Butler in the offense 2) Play perimeter defense 3) Start searching for good tickets for Monday's game

1st Half
END OF HALF - Well, the Neers don't make a dent in the score after Smith goes to the bench. Lucky to be down only 8 at the half 39-31. We'll be back for the home stretch after halftime!

:55 - Duke shooting well tonight (55% and 7/14 from 3), but here's more fodder for conspiracy theorists. Duke played in the regional with the huge dome, has inherit advantage. (Shhh, don't say anything about WVU playing in the Carrier Dome)

1:30 - Poor positioning on the defensive glass from the Neers. Missed chances to end the first half with some mo it looks like.

2:30 - My bet is that the Dick Enberg Tribute won't include his epic WVU/UK pregame botchfest from last weekend. Nolan Smith with 3 fouls (what is Coach K thinking???) and WVU can cut into the lead.

3:20 - WVU discovering they can attack the basket. Guys falling all over the place. Mazzula is lying on the floor as Smith waltzes to the hoop. Boos reign down as fans rush towards the court! Hey, I'm trying to channel my inner Bill Walton. Anything to survive a Duke blowout.

4:00 - Thank goodness "banana cut" has entered are basketball lingo. Finally Clark Kellogg has awakened!

4:27 - Duke now shooting the lights out. Maybe they'll waste all their baskets tonight? I may boycott TV for a month if Duke wins this national title. At least they'll be 32 more teams in next year's tournament.

5:04 - Nolan Smith gets his 58th 2nd chance 3 pointer in the last 2 games. 34-24.

5:42 - Duke now out to a 10 pt lead after back2back 3's by Singler and Smith. Pray for Butler.

6:16 - WVU needs Butler in the offense. As that ball went out of bounds you could see the fear in Row 1 with the raised court. Yipes.

6:56 - Mazzula changes jerseys. Ripped, blood, same thing. Nantz not exactly on his A game tonight. Someone tell him the most watched golf tourney in the history of the universe is right around the corner.

6:56 - WVU now 3/4 from downtown. But, they still find themselves trailing. Scheyer and Singler are getting way too many easy paths to the basket. WVU has to start playing some Big East defense here.

8:34 - Give it to Singler, if he's going to shoot like Kobe Bryant, Duke is hard to beat. Those are terrible shots and WVU has to bet that they won't fall all night. 23-18.

9:04 - WVU shooting over 50% from the field and getting thoroughly outplayed so far. Not a good sign.

*This is the article I've been looking for. The best, and most systematic case against rooting for Duke now and forever from SBNation. Give it a read at halftime or after the game. Duke 21 WVU 16.

10:15 - And another timeout. Gotta say, I'm disappointed in Special K thus far. I think his "Allen Wrench" quote from Game 1 might have self-retired his goofy euphemisms.

10:41 - Great to see Huggy Bear dressed up for this big game. Finally WVU makes a 3 with Jones. 18-14.

11:03 - Duke's doing a better job getting to the rim. They lead by 4. WVU has got to play some better interior defense. Crap. And now Singler is catching fire. Make it 18-11.

12:46 - Add another reason to the list, their players sound like Clark Kellogg. Lance Thomas wants to "pursue the pumpkin" and I want to pursue the mute button.

13:05 - That was a strange shot from Smith. Much like Game #1, Butler has to realize he is the best player on the floor and take the game over for the Neers.

13:30 -
*Hearing Clark Kellogg refer to "Zoubs"
Oh, and Duke is up 11-9

16:20 - And now the teams trade 3's. Scores tied at 7. I think both teams enjoy the physical, slower tempo. Duke will have a much harder time on the offensive glass than against Baylor.

17:40 - Both teams on the board. WVU having a block party the opening 2 minutes and Ebanks gives them a 4-2 lead.

18:54 - Butler way off with his first 3. Coach K must be gaining so many fans with that stool on the far sidelines. I'll try and find some good Duke-hating links at the first commercial.

19:49 - 11 seconds in and the first call goes Duke's way. This blog might not last long tonight.

20:00 - The key early will be WVU's outside shooting. If they drain it from international waters in any similarity like they did against UK, it will bode well. We'll underway and the Neers win the tap.

PREGAME
*Duke's video package makes you just love them even more, right?

*I'm still waiting for UK to come out on the court for this game, and so is my bracket.

*Give Huggy credit - he knows that he has to battle Duke on the inside. Don't underestimate the Saints-like quality with this Mountaineer team. They're playing for an entire state and plan on taking the trophy on tour if they win.

*Good. A look inside the Butler locker room. Coach Stevens is smart enough to tell his team they'll shoot better on Monday. I hope he said that with a straight face. Butler now commences into some sort of clapping song. The dork factor of this team is skyrocketing exponentially.

*OK, I have no idea who this guy is, or what this movie is, all I know is I don't want to see it. Great, now we have to be subjected to The NCAA National Semifinal Show presented by CapitalOne. Ugh.

Game 1 has just concluded, I'm going to go recharge the batteries and we'll be back for the tip of Mountaineers vs Blue Devils. Country Bumpkins vs Intellectual Elites. Huggy Bear vs Coach K. It's All Relative vs Cameron Crazies. Jerry West vs Jay Bilas. John Denver vs whoever has written a song about Durham, NC. A live blog of West Virginia vs Duke coming up next!

Yoders' Live Blog: Final 4 Live Blog - Butler/MSU

POSTGAME

As is our liveblog custom... it's our 3 stars and final thoughts!

1st Star - Gordon Hayward (Butler)
-Stepped into the national spotlight tonight with his gamewinning defensive plays and led all scorers with 19. Wake up America, he's the best player left in the tournament.
2nd Star - Barack Obama (President)
-Anytime you beat a former All-American in HORSE as the sitting POTUS, you get a shout out from RSS!
3rd Star - Dairy Queen
-No doubt getting some extra publicity from the perplexing Clark Kellogg. I wonder what he's gonna pull out of the bag for Game 2 and Duke?

Final Thoughts

That was perhaps the ugliest close game I can remember since the epic Memphis/UCLA 50-45 shootout in the 2006 Elite 8. If Butler wants to complete the Cinderella story, they'll have to do more than score 8 points and get one basket in the final 10 minutes Monday night. For Michigan State, another overachieving tourney that ends in the Final 4, but they have to be commended for getting there once again. Fans, we are one night away from Jim Nantz poetically proclaiming "THE BUTLER DID IT!"

This is a big win for little guys everywhere. Watching the game in Youngstown, Butler hung tough but Y1 is right that MSU overachieved to get this far and ran out of gas tonight. No matter who wins tonight, Butler will be the biggest title game underdog since Villanova. It's going to take a much, much better performance offensively to beat either WVU or Duke.

2nd Half
END OF GAME - Hayward makes the critical block and then gets the game-clinching rebound. It wasn't pretty. It wasn't memorable. But it doesn't matter. Butler's dream is still alive! They beat Sparty 52-50!

:2.0 - Nobody on the ball... and they give the foul with 2.0 seconds. Ideal scenario for Butler there to get Lucious on the line. Vanzant right in his jersey.

:5.5 - Might be too risky to foul in this spot... see: Kansas State v Xavier.

:5.5 - Nored 3/12 in the tourney and he has ice water running through his veins! 3 point lead. State does take a TO with 5.5. Or do they? Great, confusion reigns and Izzo is furious? Interesting.

:6.1 - It was the Green iso and Hayward comes up huge with the block! Un-be-liev-a-ble! Fantastic defensive play. 2 big free throws for Butler to make it a 3 point game.

:23 - Clark is right that State has to go quick. Maybe Lucious with a drive or a Green iso. The way this game has gone you have to favor the defense here, right?

:30 - Unlucky! Hayward nonchalantly passes to Nored who drives and sees one crawl out of the rim. Sparty with a chance now down 1 with the ball.

:56 - Good botch from Nantz. Butler with a 1 pt lead - not game tied. Hayward has to take the shot here.

:56 - This time it's Roe with the offensive rebound... and? A foul? Oook. A chance to make it a 1 point game as Mack reenters for the Doggies. Green at the line.

1:35 - Finally! Hayward misses a 3 but gets the pass back from Vanzant I believe and lays it in. Biggest play of the game so far to get that rebound and save it to a streaking Hayward, who has 40% of Butler's points tonight.

2:00 - Green hits in the paint and it is now a 2 point game!

2:23 - Good foul from Roe to stop the 3 on 1 break. Still, MSU's half-court offense looks like vintage Mike Brown in the postseason, except Michigan State doesn't have LeBron James to bail them out.

2:36 - The Bulldog offense consists of 3 free throws the last 10 minutes. They're clinging to this 3 pt lead. Now 10 straight misses and finally MSU has a chance to tie. Where's Jimmy Chitwood?

3:20 - Butler should be in full-fledged panic mode. 9 straight misses and Mack on the bench.

3:46 - Bad shot from Lucious. Butler is still leading by 4 without a FG for 9 minutes! MSU is on a 4-3 run over the last 8 minutes. I knew there was a reason I wanted to blog these games tonight. 7 points in the last 8 minutes!!! Now I know why the regular season sucked. That's the thing about March Madness - once we hit April, we remember why November-February was so forgettable.

4:19 - H & H blew some GOLDEN chances for baskets that trip. We're approaching "Do either of these teams want to win" territory.

5:30 - Finally a bucket from Morgan draws the lead to 4. Finally it seems like the crowd is getting into this one.

6:04 - Butler's half court offense suffering. Thank goodness Michigan State is bailing them out with even worse half court offense. Hayward won't say no though as he goes back to the stripe again. The lead seems bigger than 5.

7:30 - Again, a combined 8 minute FG drought both ways. 46-41 Butler.

8:00 - Thank God Coach K is arriving in the building. Get ready for an unbearable 2nd half for the doubleheader. Wow, and a Magic shot in the crowd! Two for the price of one.

8:35 - Layup botch from Jukes could be a turning point. State can't get a bucket though as Hayward calmly sees a ball go out of bounds. Not exactly Wojo out there pounding the floor... thankfully.

9:00 - Wow. 4 guys with 3 or more fouls on MSU. Butler has got to attack the basket in the closing stages. For Sparty, it'll have to be Green, Summers, and Lucious to get them back.

9:24 - Bad flop attempt from Green. Now everyone on the MSU roster, Magic Johnson and Mateen Cleaves has 3 fouls. Isn't Cleaves the least likely former Final 4 star to be arrested on suspicion of DUI?

9:50 - Green gets a nice looking clothesline from Nored and is called for losing the ball out of bounds. Love these college refs.

10:00 - Teams trading tournovers now. A foul on the inside, Butler in the bonus and Howard misses. Boy, the atmosphere in the building doesn't tell you there's 10 minutes left in a national semifinal.

11:32 - Shelvin Mack hurt? Oh boy. In other news, Clark Kellogg is trending on Twitter - both for his POTUS loss to Pres. Obama and his announcing abilities. Where's Marcelo Balboa when you need him? OK, I take that last one back.

12:15 - Lucious careless with the ball and Veasley with a breakaway jam! Butler now with their largest lead of 7. Good stat from Nantz - Sparty's largest deficit of the tourney. Can they find composure without their floor general?

13:00 - Jukes cleaning the glass. Butler has been much better on the boards so far this half. Intensity ratcheting up like a giant Allen Wrench!!

14:05 - Finally we see MSU's athleticism as Summers throws it down!! 39-37 Butler.

15:24 - Hey! Now we're on a roll as Kellogg uses an actually identifiable basketball term! Howard with a nice reverse layin and Butler suddenly to a 5 pt advantage 38-33. Clark is right that Sparty needs to start running to stay in the game.

15:37 - I like Izzo attacking Hayward defensively as Green takes a trip to the stripe. CUE THE PRETTY AUGUSTA MUSIC! For the PTI fans out there, don't lie and say that you weren't fooled by their April 1 joke. Well played ESPN. Over/Under on cat calls/distractions on course for Tiger is 1.5.

15:54 - Now Nored draws a trip to the line looking for his first points. Can Hayward be the guy and get his teammates involved? That'll be the question this second half. It looks like MSU is really missing Kalin Lucas this game in the half court - he wasn't terribly missed against Tennessee in an up and down game.

16:41 - From Y2 via his ITouch in Youngstown, Hayward has most to gain and hes playing like it. You can also follow his Tweets and our account via the link at the top right of the page.

17:16 - Roe off with his 3rd "PF" (thanks for the abbreviation Clark). Butler's offense flowing better this half, but still having trouble with outside shooting. Their half court D is picking up though.

18:21 - Butler finally back in front thanks to Veasley and Howard crashing the glass. 32-31 Dogs.

18:51 - A three answered by Hayward going back to the line. He looks so smooth off the dribble and pundits think he'll be the best NBA pro from these Final 4 teams. Tonight is the first night where I've seen that.

19:30 - Howard finally with a shot attempt but it falls out. Good coaching to try to get him involved early. The occasion hasn't been too big for Stevens so far.

20:00 - Clark Kellogg's street cred needs to be Dairy Queen'd after losing a horse game to the president. By the way, I know I may sound a little tough on Nantz and Kellogg, but I do play by play on the D3 level... and Kellogg sounds like a student journalism major trying too hard to be either Dick Vitale or Bill Raftery. Where's Billy Packer anyways...

Halftime
*Actually, that might be the hardest interview Obama has had to give outside of Fox News.

*Obama's got a good game. The scouting report says you have to force him to his right. Thank you, I'll be here all week.

*Gordon Hayward is 5/9 with 13 points. His FGA so far in the tourney: 7, 8, 13, 14. Good for Butler that he's been much more aggressive, but Nored and Howard are a combined 0-0 from the floor. That's gotta change in half #2.

Half - Well, at least the game is tied. Clearly, the winner of Game 2 will be favored Monday night. If I'm Butler, I'm encouraged to be tied at half shooting 5/14 from downtown. If I'm MSU, I'm encouraged to be tied with Morgan on the bench with 3. It's close, but let's hope for a more invigorating 2nd half. At least we had an Allen Wrench and Dairy Queen reference from Clark Kellogg - he's bringing his A game!

1st Half
:30 1st - Matt Howard has been Dairy Queen'd 9 times this year according to Clark. Let's see... Dairy Queen'd... he got ice cream? A blizzard?? Umm... ohhhh he got dq'd! He fouled out. Gotcha. Oh, and Butler ties it with a 3.

1:00 1st - Butler struggling mightily offensively as Mack is rejected. Nantz tries telling us it's been a good one, although the crowd seems like it's at the Westminster Dog Show. Are there any Butler fans at this game??? What happened to that homecrowd?

2:52 1st - Surprised that CBS is still doing that Saturday Night Fights thing, at least we'll get to hear Gus then. Quick Butler TO as MSU extends the lead to 5. Hey, at least it gives me more blogging time. Butler 1 of their last 6 from downtown... now I remember why I thought they might go out 1st round. I also remember when I was a lock to win my bracket pool. Thank you Syracuse, OSU, and UK.

3:30 1st - Oh boy, Kellogg and Obama. Obama is what I like to call an Allen Wrench President... ok, I'll stop with the politics now.

3:30 1st - Yipes. 9 combined scoreless minutes finally broken by stereotypical white bench big guy for MSU. Hayward immediately answers. This is as aggressive as he's been the entire tourney. 24-23 Spartans. Oh, and it's another timeout.

While we're in timeout here's some random thoughts from around the sports world today. AKA, the soccer I watched this morning...

1) Drogba was offside for the 2nd Chelsea goal. They move ahead of Man U with the 2-1 win today. With Rooney hurt, United might be out of the EPL race and CL to Bayern.
2) Speaking of Bayern they moved top of the Bundesliga by winning with 10 men at Schalke. Impressive D, especially by masked man Martin DeMechelis. They'll be favored to advance past Man U in the CL this week taking a 2-1 lead to Old Trafford.
3) Man City scored 3 goals in 7 minutes to start the game at Burnley. As a Liverpool fan, I'm slowly coming to the realization that the Gerrard/Benitez Era is over. Maybe they can win the Euorpa League 2 years in a row!

4:30 1st - Impressive that Gordon Hayward was elected Freshmen class president at Butler? What is this, high school? Hey, I could've done that too, but I didn't wanna.... still looking for our first points since the under 8 TO.

6:00 1st - Hayward has gone cold, but MSU's offense is starting to turn the ball over. Surprised to see Butler play into Sparty's game by jacking up quick 3's.

7:26 1st - Mack taking the scoring load from Hayward. By my calculation that's 19 of 20 pts between the 2. "That's called rakin it and takin it." Please make it stop - no, it's much funnier if it continues. Is there anyone we can rake and take Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery about now? Shoot, I'd even take Tim Brando and Mike Gminski or Brad Nessler and Jimmy Dykes. Eh, maybe just Gus. 22-20 Spartans.

9:15 1st - Kellogg talks about Summers lighting up Michigan St's offense after making a 3. I was gonna retire the blog if he said, "I like to call him The Clapper."

10:07 1st - And now Morgan is in foul trouble with 3. Kellogg talks about Draymond Green as the team's leader?? You mean the 4th leading scorer? Puzzling. Mack with the And 1 draws Butler within 1.

11:02 1st - Now Hayward picks up a foul. We hit the under 12 and it's 18-14. Boy, these automatic TV timeouts kill any momentum in the college game. Wait until the 2nd half when we'll have about 37 timeouts called. Ugh.

11:50 1st - Refs will play a big role in this game. So far it's pretty even. Hey, gotta get them warmed up to screw over West Virginia tonight, right? Oh, and Sparty's midrange game has been insanely good. 18-12 MSU.

13:00 1st - Now we're seeing Gordon Hayward start to lift his team and be more aggressive offensively. 2 straight buckets and then Butler back to the line.

14:16 1st - Ouch. Matt Howard with 2 fouls inside of 6 minutes. That's what Clark Kellogg likes to call a slap chop. Don't ask me why. 16-9 MSU.

14:30 1st Half - BTW, I've decided to switch the entry times to the game times. Hey, I'm running this thing. MSU on a nice run to get back to 12-7 ahead. It might be smart of them to up the tempo, they are that kind of team with Lucious running the show and not Lucas.

6:16 - OMG! Thank you God! We have our first Clarkism of the evening and it was before the first TV timeout!!! Zach Hahn is what I call Allen Wrench!!!! "He's got one specific, unique purpose." Wow. That is phenomenal.

6:14 - Good start thus far, 4 threes made, 2 by each team as Mack goes to the line. Could have been run out of the building after that 6-0 start.

6:10 - Tonight won't be a full play-by-play, but we'll break down what's happening and of course point out things that need to be laughed at throughout the night. I'm going solo, so I'm gonna need to save up the energy. Let's just hope we get 1 good game tonight. MSU in white, Butler in the dark bluish/black. MSU wins the tap!

6:07 - Gordon Hayward looks like he's 11 years old. Can you really picture this guy in the NBA? Butler gets an F- for the "eye test." Thank goodness Kirk Herbstreit isn't here to talk about how Butler looks walking off the bus...

6:01 - Muse's Uprising song has been all over the place. I've seen it in about 5 different commercials, ads for V, and now for Butler! I love Knights of Cydonia and the rest of their stuff is growing on me... gotta love the British rock reference early on! By the way, I was paying zero attention to what Clark was actually saying.

5:58 - Clark Kellogg's strong analysis that these 4 teams ranked in the Top 11 preseason were "kinda sorta expected to be here." This will be a fun night.

5:56 - And we get the official welcome with one of the most underrated network openings to a sporting event. I don't know why, I love the bracket with the scenes from yesteryear. Good luck with that and 96 teams... hello friends!

It's a tall task, but what better way to celebrate this year's Final 4 with a live blog of the semifinal games in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Stop by Randall Simon's Sausages throughout the night for updates and commentary on Butler-Michigan State and Duke-West Virginia. You can be sure that we'll have lots of laughs, and maybe something insightful to say too. See you at 6!

2010 MLB Preview - NL Over/Unders

We offered up a few surprises in our AL Over/Under Picks yesterday, and now it's time to go to the Senior Circuit and take a look at the National League. Who will be up and who will be down? Then check back this weekend for our World Series picks and award predictions. Let's play ball!

NL EAST

Philadelphia Phillies - Over/Under 92
-The Phils are the overwhelming NL favorites. The offseason addition of Roy Halladay has mouths watering that he may pick up 25-30 wins in the National League. Yes, he is that good. But, as good as this week's SI cover boy is, the Phils will need two players to find their top form once again to get back to the mountaintop. Cole Hamels was a wreck last season and seemed psychologically frazzled in the postseason. Similarly, the Yanks showed the world that Ryan Howard hits a curveball like Pedro Cerrano. Nevertheless, way too much talent to not win the division and have the league's best record. PICK - OVER 92
Atlanta Braves - Over/Under 86.5
-The Braves will revert back to the formula that has served them so well in the Bobby Cox Era as the veteran skipper's time draws to a close. As much as the hype machine is in full gear for Jason Heyward, this team goes as far as its starting pitching. Jair Jurrjens and Tommy Hanson provide the potential, the veteran leadership from Derek Lowe, and a back from the dead Tim Hudson can carry this club to the Wild Card. However, that's too many ifs and too much reliance on shaky injury history - let alone the bullpen and Billy Wagner. They'll be a sentimental pick, but the smart pick is... PICK - UNDER 86.5
New York Mets - Over/Under 81
-The easiest pick in the NL. The Mets were just decimated by injuries last season. And, while it is disconcerting that Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes start the season out, but they should be back soon. A team that couldn't even crack 100 homers last year gets a big boost from the free agent addition of Jason Bay... dorky smile aside. There's no way the names on this team (Wright, Reyes, Beltran, Santana, Bay, K-Rod) finish another season below .500. PICK - OVER 81
Florida Marlins - Over/Under 81
-Same sad story for the Florida Marlins. A young, talented team that will be in the race for much of the season but then fade towards the end. Hanley Ramirez will put up MVP type numbers, and it should be enough to keep them above the .500 mark... but they just can't contend with the arms race going on in New York and Philadelphia. Fredi Gonzalez has had them over 84 wins the past two seasons, but with the strength in the division, it's likely that Florida falls this year. PICK - UNDER 81
Washington Nationals - Over/Under 72
-Hello Yard Yoder. If he were here I would ask him what excites him the most about the upcoming season. And no, Stephen Strasburg doesn't count. And... neither does the Next Big Thing Bryce Harper. On the field Opening Day what excites the Washington fanbase? Is it Adam Dunn's OPS? Nyler Morgan? Somebody that might get an out? The future might be bright in Washington... let's just hope that whole 2012 apocalypse passes us by. UNDER 72

NL Central

St. Louis Cardinals - Over/Under 88
-Pujols, Holliday, Wainwright, and Carpenter are enough on their own to win this division. I'm skeptical on the playoff prospects with the Cards because it seems that other NL teams have made better moves in the offseason while St. Louis' biggest splash was getting an ex-roided up slugger to come in as their hitting coach. Still, behind Pujols and a strong pitching 1,2 punch, the Cards should once again top a weak division. PICK - OVER 88
Chicago Cubs - Over/Under 83
-Oh, my brother's Cubbies. The best move by any team in the offseason was their dump of Milton Bradley for a living, breathing human being. The Cubs are one of several teams depending on bouncebackability from many veterans. Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, and Zambrano all dealt with injuries, poor form, or emotional trauma in '09. Xavier Nady and Marlon Byrd come into the fold in the outfield as well. For once, the Cubbies enter a season under the radar, and that's a very good thing. They'll challenge for the division and wild card births. OVER - 83
Milwaukee Brewers - Over/Under 80.5
-Milwaukee always seems like the square peg trying to fit in the round hole. For as good as they've been the latter half of this decade, and as much promise as they've shown... they've had 1 postseason birth via the '08 Wild Card and a quiet first round exit. Again this season it seems like a similar plot will play out. This team's pitching will be its downfall with the most mediocre pitching staff in the majors. Randy Wolf, Doug Davis, and Jeff Suppan don't scream excellence. With the team below on the rise, Milwaukee dips beneath 80 wins. PICK - UNDER 80.5
Cincinnati Reds - Over/Under 78
-Finally, this looks like the year that the Reds will break through. For the first time since Jose Rijo and Tom Browning, the Reds might have a competent pitching staff - woo hoo! Aaron Harang has ace capabilities if healthy, Bronson Arroyo is a solid innings getter, and the potential of Johnny Cueto, Homer Bailey, and Cuban flamethrower Aroldis Chapman will lift the league's oldest team back to its winning ways. While the offense isn't the Big Red Machine, guys like Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips get the job done. A surprise contender in 2010. PICK - OVER 78
Houston Asrtos - Over/Under 77
-This is a team caught in baseball purgatory. One that desperately needs to rebuild, but oen that has enough older stars to talk themselves into contending this season. Houston hello... it ain't happening this season. Carlos Lee, Lance Berkman, and Roy Oswalt are much more likely to be July trade bait than leading the Astros to a pennant. This team finished last season on an extended losing streak, and they'll pick up right where they left off. Perhaps the easiest under pick of them all. PICK - UNDER 77
Pittsburgh Pirates - Over/Under 71
-Oh wait! But, there's always the Pittsburgh Pirates! Ha Ha (in sinister Gus Johnson voice). The Pirates have suffered through 17 straight losing seasons, and they seem committed to keeping that streak intact. They haven't reached even 70 wins since 2004! Every good player that has come through the Steel City in the past decade has been traded away for the next wave of youngsters. The only drama for Pirates fans is betting on when and where Andrew McCutchen leaves. PICK - UNDER 71.5

NL West

Los Angeles Dodgers - Over/Under 84
-Surprised to see the Dodgers sitting atop the Vegas picks for the NL West. Although they won 95 games last season, this is a team that has plenty of question marks. Can Manny stay away from women's fertility drugs? Will they find a true ace? Can they break through the Phillies jinx? Has the rest of the NL West passed them by? While they won't win the division (hey, we gotta save something for our WS picks to find out who!), they'll certainly get above 84 wins thanks to the young core of Kemp, Ethier, and Loney. PICK - OVER 84
San Francisco Giants - Over/Under 83
-This team is the reverse of the Phoenix Suns. They are so dependent on their pitching that it's not even funny. The Giants ranked last in OPS last season (hey, how bout that to the kids that worship Bill James, I used an OPS stat!) and there's no moves that inspire an offensive awakening except for the vastly underrated Mark Derosa being slotted anywhere on the diamond. Lincecum and Cain are an automatic pick for the Over even if Randy Winn and Edgar Renteria are two of your sluggers. PICK - OVER 83
Colorado Rockies - Over/Under 83
-This is another team to watch out West. Troy Tulowitzki is next in line for the new kid on the block as the best player in baseball. They finished 20-11 to steal the Wild Card and enter the playoffs for the second year in a row. Although Rocktober didn't repeat itself, Colorado is built to contend consistently. They play to their strengths at Coors Field. The one thing that will help the Rocks more than anything is one more good season out of Todd Helton. Like the other top contenders in the West - an easy pick. PICK - OVER 83
Arizona Diamondbacks - Over/Under 81
-Hard to fathom what Vegas sees to project an 11 game jump for the D-Backs in a stacked NL West. It's not like this team has a Top 5 pitcher that sat out all last season waiting to return to full strength... oh, wait, they do? And I stole him in the late rounds in my fantasy draft? Chaching! Brandon Webb hopes to return to his dominant self... and yet, I'm still bearish about the D-Backs hopes when looking at the teams above them. They might enter the scrap, but the safer pick is under. PICK - UNDER 81
San Diego Padres - Over/Under 71
-I have nothing enlightening to say about the Padres except that they'll be bad. Hey, give me a break, I've been at this for over 2 hours. You should be thanking me people! PICK - UNDER 71

Speaking of work, I'm contemplating a live Final 4 blog tomorrow. We'll see how many annoying Clark Kellogg euphemisms we'll hear from Indy and how inspired I'm feeling tomorrow afternoon. Ah, yes, and don't forget our World Series and award projections coming soon, only at RSS!

2010 MLB Preview - AL Over/Unders

It's that time of year again. Spring is in the air. The Masters is coming. MLS has kicked off. The Final 4 is approaching. And... Australian Rules Football begins! Wooo! Oh, yea... and it's baseball season. As is our tradition here at RSS, we'll preview the National Pastime by giving you our Over/Under Picks for each team. First up is the American League, and as always, we tell you like it is! Let's play ball!

AL EAST

New York Yankees - Over/Under 95.5
-Ah, the Evil Empire is back! After a rough couple seasons, the Yankees are in full swing as they enter the second year of the new Yankee Stadium as defending champs. Key players like Jeter, Posada, A-Rod, and Rivera are a year older, which might be cause for concern because time catches up with everyone. Returning Joba to his 8th inning role might be the best move Joe Girardi could make. The rotation is stacked from top to bottom and the lineup appears as potent as ever with the wise addition of Curtis Granderson. Granderson will be an upgrade over the Melkman and as long as Brett Gardner and Nick Swisher give something to the cause, the Yanks should be able to get 100 wins. PICK - OVER 95.5
Boston Red Sox - Over/Under 94.5
-Everyone drools over the pitching staff with Beckett, Lackey, Buchholz, Dice-K, Wakefield, and Lester. They'll produce, but can it overcome the worst Sox lineup in a decade with lackluster new additions. Adrian Beltre (not in a contract year - 8 HRs last season)? Marco Scutaro? Mike Cameron? These moves were made because of the newest sabermetric, Baseball Prospectus, Moneyballish fad "run prevention" - you haven't heard, it's all the rage. It centers on great defense and pitching preventing runs, clever name huh? Run prevention is cited in the turnarounds in Seattle and Tampa Bay, but Boston? The only runs it will really prevent is on Boston's offense! I don't care if you are a premodern or postmodern baseball guy, taking away that kind of production from your offense and replacing it with average hitters will make the Red Sox suffer, even if they have the steel curtain playing behind them. PICK - UNDER 94.5
Tampa Bay Rays - Over/Under 89.5
-On paper, this team looks as good as the group that made the World Series two years ago. The lineup has more experience and more power. Big things are expected from BJ Upton this season to help the offense and David Price to follow through on what we saw in the 2008 ALCS. This is the team with the most to lose or gain this season. If Tampa can't pass either Boston or New York they may be forced to get rid of major contributors like Carl Crawford and go through a mini-reloading phase. Joe Maddon has the chops to recognize this and push the Rays into the 90 win mark and back to the postseason. PICK - OVER 89.5
Baltimore Orioles - Over/Under 74.5
-I'm a fan of a lot of the Orioles' young talent. Jones, Wieters and Markakis are the headliners. But, unlike say the Oklahoma City Thunder, in baseball young teams with talent are never properly rewarded. Instead, this talented group will play 70-92 ball and lose scores of games to New York, Boston, and Tampa. Of all the young teams in baseball, I like the O's lineup the best, but I wonder if they'll ever get a chance to play on a winning team in this division. PICK - UNDER 74.5
Toronto Blue Jays - Over/Under 70.5
-Hello floating realignment! Honestly, that's the best hope of this team even sniffing the playoffs in the next 20 years. To add insult to injury, the only reason to watch Blue Jays baseball is now plying his trade in Philly. Their rebuilding project is just starting. Aaron Hill is the only bright light offensively, and the only suspense to their season will be to see how Kyle Drabek performs if and when he is put into the fold. Expect the Jays to be battling for the worst record in the league. UNDER 70.5

AL Central

Minnesota Twins - Over/Under 83.5
-Everything is right in Twinkieland. Hometown hero Joe Mauer is staying home, the beautiful new outdoor ballpark will be opened, and the lineup is more potent than ever. Joe Nathan's loss will hurt, but Ron Gardenhire should find a way to work around that injury. Don't underestimate the mental power of hosting teams at Target Field early and late in the season. Teams won't be adjusted to playing in the Minnesota cold, and early word is that it is a hitter's park with the second shortest foul lines in the big leagues. This team will score many, many runs. PICK - OVER 83.5
Chicago White Sox - Over/Under 82.5
-Peavy, Buehrle, Danks and Floyd may be as good of a 1-4 as any starting rotation has in the majors. It's a fantastic mix of youth and experience, and a healthy Jake Peavy is one of the best in the biz. Gordon Beckham and Carlos Quentin will have to lead the offense. It will be strange to see Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones as Chi Sox, but they should be able to find enough runs to buttress their great starting pitching. It will be a great race between them and Minny that could go down to the last day of the season. OVER - 82.5
Detroit Tigers - Over/Under 80.5
-Detroit's biggest move was getting rid of Curtis Granderson. Now, they must depend on a mix of rookies, veterans, and Miguel Cabrera to provide runs. The Tigers can be encouraged by the top of the rotation with Verlander and Porcello, but who else can pitch quality innings? I can't see Detroit contending for the division crown this time round, but I can see them at least getting to 81-81 in a weak division. PICK - OVER 80.5
Cleveland Indians - Over/Under 74.5
-Oy. Has any team dropped from the precipus of the World Series to violent rebuilding mode so quickly? What happened to this team was criminal. They would be easy winners in this division with Lee, Sabathia, Martinez, and the rest of the jettisoned stars. Alas, they join countless other teams rolling the dice on potential. The pitching staff is a giant question mark after being wrecked by injuries to Westbrook and Carmona. I'd like to see the Indians do well, but it's not happening this year. PICK - UNDER 74.5
Kansas City Royals - Over/Under 71.5
-Three things in life are certain - death, taxes, and the Royals being terrible. When the first line in USA Today's preview notes improved defense as a strength... that's not a good sign. There's nothing here behind Zack Grienke. How soon before we can put him in a Yankee uniform? PICK - UNDER 71.5

AL West

Texas Rangers - Over/Under 84.5
-Surprised to see the Rangers leading off the AL West? So am I! Last year was their first over .500 since 2004, they never have good enough pitching, oh and we found out that their manager did cocaine! But, this actually seems like a really good pick for a team that won 87 games last year. A healthy Josh Hamilton, Vlad Guerrero DHing in a hitter's paradise, and youngster Julio Borbon will make a good lineup even better. This team's pitching is a lot like the defense of the New Orleans Saints - it won't be great, but just good enough. Anything more than half of a season from Rich Harden will be a bonus too. Make no mistake, this is a team on the way up. PICK - OVER 84.5
Seattle Mariners - Over/Under 83.5
-The Mariners were one of the surprise packages of the 2009 season. They had a +24 win differential last year bouncing back from a 101 loss season. Folks will say they overachieved, but this is a team with talent. Ichiro and King Felix are now joined by Chone Figgins and Cliff Lee. You don't have to be a sabermetrician to figure out that adding one of the Top 5 pitchers in the game to your team is a good thing. But, there's the matter of the combustible answer to driving in runs... your pal and mine, Milton Bradley! Yipes. If anyone can ruin this thing it's him. Trying to predict Milton Bradley is like trying to predict our Ohio weather, nearly impossible. Here's guessing the more lax Pacific Northwest is a better fit for the volatile slugger than the fishbowl that was Wrigley Field. PICK - OVER 83.5
Los Angeles Angels - Over/Under 83.5
-The toughest pick of the division. It's easy to just check the over here because of the Angels' winning tradition, but in the words of Lee Corso not so fast my friend! Chone Figgins gone. Vlad Guerrero gone. John Lackey gone. I like the Matsui pickup, but this team is living on borrowed time by depending upon so many 30 something players. Plus, none of the bright prospects have ever really panned out to be the jawdropping phenoms we were led to believe aside from maybe Kendry Morales. They did win 97 games last year, but I just think that Seattle and Texas have made too many good moves to not pass them by. Asking them to drop 15 games is a tall task, but hey, I'm a gambling man. PICK - UNDER 83.5
Oakland A's - Over/Under 78.5
-This is one of the easiest picks. Oakland plays in a division with 3 other legit teams and they have absolutely zero run producers in their lineup. Unless it's 2001 and you consider Eric Chavez to be that guy. Their pitching and defense will be good, but not enough to overcome their tee ball power. Ben Sheets as the savior? Not a good idea. Again, Moneyball will go bankrupt this season. We'll likely hear about what a bright future this team has, and how they're smarter than everyone else, and they'll make a "great move" at the deadline. Too bad that hasn't led to wins in recent years. PICK - UNDER 78.5
