It's time! When we Yoder Bros started RSS a little under a year ago, this was one of the events that we had our eye on...live blogging the NFL Draft! And now that we're finally here, we'll be around all night bringing you coverage of the picks, the teams, and of course, the unintentionally funny moments from ESPN's coverage!
POSTGAME
Best Pick: Ndamukong Suh (2nd - Detroit) Javhid Best (30th - Detroit)
-Who would've ever thunk that Detroit would claim both of our choices as Best Pick?! They're the big winners so far with impact rookies on both sides of the ball.
Worst Pick: Tyson Alualu (10th - Jacksonville) Tim Tebow (25th - Denver)
-Alualu was simply a jawdropping reach, while the jury is certainly out on Tebow as a brilliant or crazy pick.
Biggest Surprise: Nobody Gets Jimmy Clausen
-He's going to have a rough night's sleep in sunny SoCal. The Rams will get a lot of calls over the night and will wield a lot of power with the 33rd pick tomorrow. Don't be surprised if someone moves up to get him over the night.
Best Player Available: Sergio Kindle (OLB Texas) Arrelious Benn (WR Illinois)
-Benn is a physical monster and would be a wise pick in the first half of R2. Likewise, Kindle is a surprising fall to Friday and will make for a great value pick for a team looking for an edge rusher.
That'll do it for our draft coverage. Thanks for joining us throughout the night for our Live Blog of the NFL Draft! It's been a lot of fun and we've seen plenty of surprises and interesting stories throughout the night. It'll be another fun night tomorrow with R2 and R3 coming up and we'll hope to join you at some point in the evening with our thoughts as we'll try and pick up the draft action in progress. Bye for now.
11:05 - And with that all said... the Saints go corner with Patrick Robinson from Florida State. I would have much rather have seen them go with either a DT or an OLB... but, as was seen in the middle part of last season, the Saints really suffered without Tracy Porter and Jabari Greer. That's a corner the last 2 years in the 1st 2 rounds. It's amazing how in 1 calendar year the Saints secondary has gone from the team's weakness to a team strength.
This tells me that the Saints aren't too sure Darren Sharper is coming back and they're thinking about moving Malcolm Jenkins to safety. The signings of Alex Brown and Jimmy Wilkerson removed the need at DE, and there are in-house options at OLB, so maybe DT is the pick in R2. We'll collect ourselves and be back with a recap in just a few minutes!
11:01 - Washington is a better fit for the 4-3, but Kindle, as a 3-4 outside rush guy would bring a skill set the Saints D doesn't have. Gregg Williams does play the 3-4 quite a bit, and pass rush is a need, here comes Breesus!!!!
10:58 - BTW, Drew Brees makes history as the first active player to announce his team's pick. You've gotta love the guy - especially the Madden spoof commercial making fun of his son's headphones. Brees will break the Madden Curse because he's not afraid to take it on, he tweeted this earlier today...
Here's what I have to say about the Madden curse: Destiny is more powerful than a curse. Whatever is meant to be will happen. Faith #fb
10:57 - And finally it is the Saints turn! Let me bask in SB glory one more time (dramatic pause) ok... as beat reporter Jeff Duncan tweets, it wouldn't be a shock to see the Saints trade down in this spot with so many good defenders left and both McCoy and Clausen on the board. We've seen Mickey Loomis go best player available many times before (McCallister, Meachem, etc)... so maybe Taylor Mays? I'm hoping for either Brian Price or Darryl Washington at DT and OLB respectively, but anything is possible.
10:55 - Interesting pick to pair TCU DE Jerry Hughes with Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney. I guess you can't have too many pass rushers, but I feel like addressing their aging OLine or their injury prone defensive back 7 might have been a better pick.
10:53 - And now we catch Jon Gruden swearing coming back from break! With Lawrence Frank's epic comments on First Take yesterday, this is not a good week for ESPN and the FCC. It does seem much more normal to hear Gruden swear though. Wow, ESPN has been terrible tonight coming in and out of breaks, hot mics, etc. Shockingly bad.
10:50 - I think Cleveland has to go for it here and not risk waiting until the 2nd round tomorrow. I wouldn't wait with QB needy teams like Buffalo willing to get ahead of you in R2. Do it now and give up just a bit to secure Clausen. It makes all the sense in the world with 2 QBs still on the board for the Browns to make a move now and get one of these QBs. It's a much better move than Ricky Williamsing your draft for Sam Bradford.
10:48 - The possibilities are amazing when you don't pick a WR every year in the first round. Somewhere Matt Millen is throwing his shoe at the TV and cursing out the Lions for not drafting Mardy Gilyard.
10:45 - And out of left field... Detroit is now on the clock??? Well, if this was Jimmy Clausen it would be the draft shock of the millennium. Javhid Best on the phone in what would be a sneaky great move for the Lions for a home run hitter on the turf in the dome. Best has highlight reel capabilities and adds a threat the Lions offense hasn't had since Barry Sanders.
Meanwhile, Chris Berman is losing the last shred of respect I had for him by throwing all journalistic integrity out the window and patting the Vikings brass on the butt for passing on a QB. When Favre breaks down this year, I won't be the only one laughing.
10:43 - Well, I didn't believe it when we did our mock, but Jimmy Clausen is sitting there at #30 waiting for the Vikings to take him. In one sense, the pick is the only way for the Vikings to go. Tavaris Jackson isn't your QB of the future, so why not have Clausen learn under Favre, who hopefully could embrace a young QB this time...although, Favre may really think he can play forever. Once again, Gruden makes a great point that the Vikes could use a RB as a replacement for Chester Taylor. Meanwhile TJ and Berman of course take the angle that drafting a QB for the future would be an insult to Brett Favre, as if the franchise will collapse on itself when Favre leaves...
10:39 - Friend of the program Vernon Gholston breathes a huge sigh of relief - looks like he has another year to prove himself. And now Clausenpalooza 2010 is back on! Here we go...
10:37 - He's been the best DB left for a while in this NFL Draft. He should've gone sooner but he is now getting the chance to open up some real estate next to Revis Island. Is there a better CB to learn from in the league? As Gruden points out - Revis, Cromartie, and Wilson is a sick nickel package.
10:34 - Looking ahead a little to my beloved Saints, it's looking pretty good for them to grab either a DT or OLB at #32. I had Brian Price tabbed originally, but with both Kindle and Hughes dropping to the end of R1 they would be good picks - although I have a feeling one of them will be picked by the Jets.
By the way, what's weirder? Robert Downey Jr. as a superhero or Mickey Rourke as a supervillian... Iron Man II anyone?
10:32 - Sensible pick for the Fins as they go with Jared Odrick, the DLineman from Penn St. You know, the more I listen to Gruden, the more I wish Steve Young and Tom Jackson would shut up. Teams who move back can learn a lot from Bill Parcells though, moving back, accumulating picks, and still picking up a quality player in an area of need. Meanwhile, there are still a lot of talented defensive players on the board for the Jets, Vikings, Colts, and Saints...oh, and that Clausen guy, too. Everyone thought the story tonight would be where Tebow would go in Round 2, but it might be Clausen who stews all night long.
10:26 - Brady Quinn is wondering what happened to his bright future tonight. The stars were aligned when he went to Cleveland, but a broken finger and a bad year later, he's a backup for Tim Tebow after being traded for a 6th rounder, conditional pick, and Peyton Hillis. 2 pretty boy QB's in one place, but it looks like only 1 is destined to see the field. Brady Quinn is among this draft's biggest losers.
1o:23 - Again, it looks like right block, wrong house. The Pats pick CB Devin McCourty from Rutgers. Wow. A lot of teams had Wilson as the highest rated CB on their boards. Puzzling why he's dropping after the great performances he had in Boise's biggest games. A corner makes sense for the hoodie, but again I'm not sure it's the right one.
10:21 - Anyways, like I wanted to say 30 minutes ago... I would expect the hoodie to pick a versatile front 7 player to move around his defense. Sergio Kindle would make a lot of sense here, as would Boise CB Kyle Wilson, who some had going as high as #7 in this draft.
10:20 - If I'm Jimmy Clausen... why would I want to go to Minny and carry around Brett Favre's bags for a year or 2 and deal with that drama. We saw what a horrible teammate Favre was for Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, and it will be the same in Minny for any unlucky young QB that gets to not learn at the feet of the master.
10:18 - OK, so Williams is a fine pick. But here's the situation. Minnesota at 30 is the next possible destination for Clausen. However, will they use a 1st on a QB? They haven't since Culpepper in '99. I can see them going more developmental in R2 or R3. That leaves Cleveland the option of trading to #31 for Clausen. Too good to be true??
10:16 - Steve Young talks... too much.
10:14 - Schefter reporting that Dan Williams will go to Arizona at #26. That's also a fantastic value pick for the Cards if it comes off. Also, our pal Jimmy Traina of SI has the frantic Berman clip from tonight.
10:12 - As much as I disagree with Kiper's Clausen love, I agree with his H-Back assessment of Tebow. Also, as a fellow neckbearder, I feel bad for Kyle Orton, he'll be out of Denver before you know it. At least Tim Tebow has experience with coaches with a God complex.
10:11 - OK, with Tebowmania aside - the biggest nonloser QBs are Sergio Kindle and Dan Williams. Shocked that the best DT in the draft is still available at #26. I'm quietly saying prayers that he falls to the Saints.
10:09 - I knew someone was going to trade up into R1 to take Tebow. It was destined to happen. However, we really need a camera on Jimmy Clausen throwing a chair through his porch door. Someone give me a live shot to LA!! I see Tebow's 1st year in Denver very similar to his first year in Florida. He'll play in GL and situational spots. Then, when the Broncos have had enough of Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn, Tebow will step in and start in 2011.
10:08 - Mel Kiper needs to get over his mancrush on Jimmy Clausen and say that Tebow will be a good pro. I think Gruden knows more about QBs than Kiper. After all, didn't Kiper say that JaMarcus Russell was going to multiple Pro Bowls??
10:07 - Mass chaos on the ESPN set as they don't know who's on the clock, but we see Tim Tebow on the phone putting on a Denver Broncos hat! Safe to say the Broncos have traded up to take JC QB himself, Tim Tebow. So, I guess PFT was right! And, I'll also stick by my guns that its Josh McDaniels ego (same with Jon Gruden) that thinks Tebow can be molded into an NFL QB. I'm not convinced. I love Tebow as a person, I like him as a situational Wildcat type, but mark my words, he'll never make a Pro Bowl as a starting QB, and the Broncos will regret this pick long after McDaniels and Tebow are gone from Denver.
10:03 - Glad to see ESPN has not cut out the mics at the ESPN set during the military ceremony! And we have Berman silently waving his arms looking mad as hell! Hahahahaha... this is amazing! We've got to show this Youtube clip, right? We are a family friendly blog, so I'll link to Berman and this video that has some NSFW language, but is absolutely hilarious.
10:01 - Did Deion Sanders make that pick? I like taking the best player available, which is clearly Bryant, in this case. This is the one time I'd like to have NFL Network to see Deion talking about the suspension and Michael Irvin guffawing non-stop. That would be quality TV. It's hitting on 17 at the BlackJack table, but in this case I think it's what Dallas has to do.
10:00 - Sure, Bryant could be a great talent, but Dallas has other needs, especially with Miles Austin. It does give them a scary 3 WR set with Bryant, Austin, R. Williams, and Witten. But, they didn't lose in the playoffs at Minnesota because a lack of offensive skill players. Yes, it's a great steal, but does it really solve any of their problems for a team that wants to win now?
9:57 - Only the little green man inside Belichick's hoodie knows what's going on here. With Mathews gone, my guess is another toy for his front 7 that could move around.... well, wait a second. Dallas has traded up to #24. Dez Bryant?? That would be the Jerry Jones move.
9:54 - While Yohey's going out on limbs, I will too. Seattle will acquire Marshawn Lynch via trade with Buffalo this offseason. It makes too much sense not to happen, so it probably won't.
9:53 - I know we're talking Bryant to the Ravens, but if you're New England and have an aging Randy Moss and injured Wes Welker - why not Bryant? At least Bill Belichick could teach him the Patriot way, whatever that is.
9:52 - GB goes OL with Bryan Bulaga, a player we had much earlier. Seems like a good value pick (regardless of Berman's lazy and pathetic stereotyping of the white midwesterner going to Green Bay). I'm calling a stunner now - if Jimmy Clausen falls past Arizona, and maybe even Minnesota... Cleveland will trade back into R1 to get him.
9:50 - Even though I think the Bryant/character stuff is overblown, WR is a smart pick for Denver. Let's face it, Kyle Orton (or Brady Quinn) needs all the help he can get. But, it is amazing that a project like Thomas could surpass a talent like Bryant on character issues. If Schefter's report is correct, the Ravens are getting the steal of the draft at #25 in Dez Bryant. As for Tebow, he can probably pack it in for the evening.
9:49 - Well, nevermind about that Tebow buzz...that's what you get for trusting a dirt sheet like PFT. As for the Broncos, this is the smart pick after trading Brandon Marshall. You knew McDaniels wasn't going to go with the WR with character issues, so Thomas, the WR from Ga Tech was the correct pick.
9:46 - This is the thing about ESPN, they always find the worst time to take commercials. Every year, they always take one before the Bears and Saints pick, and it drives us Yoders crazy!
9:45 - And Denver has swooped back in to the 1st round...and ESPN goes to commercial? Don't they know this could be Jesus Christ Quarterback himself Tim Tebow? If Tebow goes here ahead of Clausen I'll be shocked. But, don't put it past the ego of Josh McDaniels to think he can be the guy to make Tim Tebow an All-Pro QB.
9:42 - (bowing thankfully) Well, if you'll see our mock draft I called this the lock of the 1st round. And, even with Dez Bryant still there, the Bengals have never had a playmaking TE who could stretch the field and be a weapon in the passing game. As Mel brings up, durability and injury is an issue, but if he stays healthy, he can be a big time player.
9:40 - Dez Bryant to Cincy is my prediction. Sure he has character issues, but when has that ever bothered Mike Brown and the Bengals? The pick is in...and it's Jermaine Gresham TE Oklahoma
9:37 - What?!? No! I had the position right... but the Texans go with Kareem Jackson at corner from Alabama. I think most people had Wilson more highly rated, but an Alabama defender is never a bad selection... unless it's 1200 pound Eyjafjallajokull Cody.
9:34 - Anyone ever thought that Earl Thomas and Brandon Graham would be higher Twitter trending topics than LeBron James? Or Justin Bieber?? The NFL Draft is a wondrous thing. By the way, the "no means no" chant is now a Top 10 all-time draft moment. Well done NY fans, well done.
9:31 - Through 18 picks - we have 14/18 names correct (and a shoddy 5 to the correct team, hey it's our first day give us a break!) We had Campbell, Bulaga, 'Spoon and Bryant going in the Top 18. Out of those 4, I would expect Bryant to go first. Atlanta was reportedly high on Graham, and they go with... Sean Weatherspoon! As a Saints fan, that was my dream pick... and it kinda sucks to see him go to a division rival.
9:30 - Awkward moment of the night with the Steelers on the clock. The crowd chants "No means no" as a child from the Make a Wish foundation comes out to announce the pick...a brilliant strategic ploy by Commish Goodell. Let's see David Stern top that! With the actual pick, the Steelers help their OLine with Maurkice Pouncey, the C/G from Florida. Definitely a solid pick, the current Steelers OLine could learn some protection tips from Big Ben's bodyguards.
9:26 - Clausen in Black and Yellow? Much stranger things have happened. If not, look out Denver and Minnesota. With Iupati gone, Maurkice Pouncey makes a lot of sense, or secondary help.
9:25 - The steam is coming out of Mel Kiper's ears cause his golden boy is falling. The 49ers could have used a defensive impact player, but building from the inside out with a tackle and guard in the first round and Frank Gore in the backfield is never a bad thing.
9:23 - The Cavs have cut the lead to 2. Kyle Wilson here would look good in a Niner uniform. We had Haden in that spot, but it seems like the place to go. Once SF passes on Jimmy Clausen, we'll see if anyone trades up to get him. Clausen's fall also hurts McCoy and Tebow. The longer Jimmy waits, the longer Tim and Colt wait too.
9:20 - Darn. The Titans do go defense with Derrick Morgan. He will assuredly shore up their D-Line after losing Vanden Bosch to Detroit. The top DE on the board will do great in Titan country. I just wonder if Vince Young could use a legit WR. It's now or never for Clausen...
9:19 - A night of surprises would continue if my pick comes through here with Dez Bryant. When it happens I would love to wax poetically.
9:16 - As I thought - the JPP pick means Osi Umenyora is certainly on the trade block. I don't get it. You have needs at LB and secondary, and you pick a defensive end with a lot of potential? That's a bad pick from the Giants. Kyle Wilson or Weatherspoon would have made a lot more sense. With rumors of the Titans getting Haynesworth back, is hometown boy Dan Williams the pick here?
9:15 - You'd think with Osi and Justin Tuck the GMen would rather go MLB, but they pick the pass-rushing project Jason Pierre-Paul out of South Florida. Again, a guy with the athleticism, but does he turn into a great pass rusher, or a Vernon Gholston? It's too hard to tell, so I'm not sure I like this pick. And there's Berman with some joke about a Bob Dylan song for some reason. Anyway, rumors at PFT are flying that the Broncos are trying to maneuver to take Tim Tebow!
9:12 - We're trying to break a little news here too that you might not see on ESPN. PFT is reporting the Broncos slide back in R1 is for one man - Tim Tebow.
9:08 - With all of this activity and unexpected moves it's almost impossible to have a chance to make fun of Chris Berman... or make fun of our lack of correct picks after the Top 6. I think we've got a good chance with the Giants and Sean Weatherspoon though - although they might look to Kyle Wilson as well. FYI, LeBron has the look goin with the Cavs down 9 and 9 to go, while Chi leads and Pitt is tied in the Stanley Cup, I promise we'll cover those soon, maybe...
9:04 - Without a premier RB, Seattle should go D. Earl Thomas is on the phone so it looks like he is the pick... and he is. It's what the Eagles should have done 10 minutes ago. At least the New York fans drowned them out this year. Great pick for their secondary. The kid has the mental game and is great at anticipatory moves. Good picks to start the Carroll era in the great northwest.
9:02 - Things are really interesting now as Seattle could go with DLine help, a corner like Kyle Wilson, or a new toy for Charlie Whitehurst in Dez Bryant. Or, they could shock everyone and take Golden Boy Jimmy Clausen! If I'm Seattle though, I'm trading down to pick up an extra pick.
8:57 - And the Eagles pick Ear... whoa! Brandon Graham??? Huh?? I think we're entering the Twilight Zone now. Graham will probably a solid pick, but pass rushers in the mid first round are perhaps the biggest guessing game as to whether they will succeed or not. Obviously Adam Schefter has been thrown a curve here and struck out like Ryan Howard. By the way... how good was that Michigan defense anyways?
8:53 - Now the Eagles are trading up! This draft has had unprecedented activity! Schefter is calling Earl Thomas (who we had at #7) as the pick. I like this move a lot. It fills a need with an impact player who will move into the lineup right away. Meanwhile, I'm not sure I'm in love with Denver accumulating 3rd and 4th rounders. On SD, it's a bit of a reach, but they needed a RB like Mathews - hoping he'll be the Matt Forte of this year's class. If I'm a fan I'd rather have my team make the move and trade up rather than wait, hope, and settle.
8:47 - Big move up from the low 20s by the Chargers. Thinking they want a 3-down back like Ryan Mathews or a 3-4 NT like Dan Williams. The pick is in...and its RB Ryan Mathews of Fresno St. He's a guy I've liked a long time, a hard runner who should be dependable. Sure, it might be a reach for a player who was projected in the 20s, but without LT it's a smart move for the Bolts.
8:43 - SF trades up 2 spots to select Anthony Davis. Boy, I didn't think Miami needed a OT, so I'm not sure why the trade up is necessary? We had the pick at 13, so I'm going to count it as a correct pick!
8:41 - I feel like we need Fran Fraschilla at this point. This is the random foreign guy going in the 1st Round of the NBA Draft. Nobody, absolutely nobody had Alualu going #10 to Jax. I'm stunned. This draft has gone from predictable to having no idea what is going on! This is a reach by at least 20-30 picks and will be the reach of the draft. Oh well, at least Alualu will fill out that upper deck in Jacksonville!
8:37 - Not so sure about Spiller for ROY, but I give the Bills credit for acting quickly. I think I smelled burnt rubber through my HD from Commish Goodell. And what the heck just happened? The Jags pick Tyson Alualu...a DT from Cal??? Who?? We get the WTF look from everyone on the ESPN set as the camera immediately goes to Mel Kiper who tells us he was a late 1st early 2nd at best. Rolando McLain wasn't a reach to be, but this is Stretch Armstrong compared to that pick! And now the 49ers are moving up!
8:35 - If Clausen doesn't go here at 10, the fall begins.
8:34 - Wow. I'm stunned. We heard that the Bills might be shopping Lynch, but I am absolutely floored that they would take Spiller in what is clearly not a need position. This is probably more of an indictment on the rest of the OL/DL prospects too. Even though I like Spiller, I'm not sure he's a good pick for Buffalo.
8:33 - Right away the Bills are picking and they go with C.J. Spiller?! Wow, another curveball. As Brother Yohey just said, business is picking up...and Marshawn Lynch's days in Buffalo are officially numbered.
8:32 - And the Raiders go with Rolando McLain?? Wow, that's one guy that was never attached to the Raiders in any mock draft that we ever saw. But, that said he should be one of the least riskiest picks of the draft. So, maybe the Raiders stumbled on to something. Of course, Mel uses the R-word for the 1st time in analyzing the pick.
8:27 - With the large stockpile of picks the Brownies have it wouldn't be a shock to see them later tonight. Now the Raiders are on the clock. We have them taking the athletic freak OT Bruce Campbell from Maryland. Right now, it wouldn't surprise me to see anyone from Bruce Campbell to George Blanda being the pick here for Crazy Al Davis.
8:25 - I'm not too disappointed with Haden. They needed secondary help with their lack of depth (even after trading for Sheldon Brown) and playing in an SEC defense will help. Earl Thomas would have been my preference (as you can see from the mock) but what can you do?
8:22 - I can't tell if Haden is crying because he's happy he's being drafted... or crying because he might have to go play for Eric Mangini in Cleveland!
8:19 - McShay going with the dreaded touchscreen live is a big risk... I wonder if Mel Kiper has that thing sabotaged. Michael Smith is reporting that Cleveland is deciding between Wilson and Haden. We thought they might go S, but it looks like they're going corner. They should try and trade back... but I don't think there is worth anyone trading up for at this spot. Browns fans are loving that 4 gm win streak now!
8:17 - The tide of the draft depends on this pick. They could go Clausen and chnge the draft that way, they could pick a surprise defender, maybe a shock like Spiller, or a trade. A lot can happen. True, and Browns fans should thank whatever God they pray to that Eric Mangini is no longer pulling the strings.
8:14 - Looks like Okung is the pick. Wow. Gruden predicts CJ Spiller as Rookie of the Year, even before he's picked. It depends on where it goes, but once again I think Gruden is on to something. Okung is indeed the pick. Thanks to Yohey's pick at #4 we're only 4/6 but have nailed the 6 players so far. Who says this mock draft stuff is hard...
8:12 - Winner so far: Oklahoma and the Big XII. Loser: Bob Stoops. How has this guy lost so many big games with this kind of talent??? I'm guessing w/ Williams gone Okung is the pick. Although Pete Carroll could do something crazy here.
8:09 - Don't question the popularity of the NFL. Draft fever has hit my non-NFL fan friend Katie - she's now quoting Jon Gruden - Eric Berry is ready to come into the league and an impact hitter. The apocalypse is nearing...
8:07 - F%&$! That was my hope and dream that my Browns would take Berry. Now who? Clausen? Thomas? Wilson? Haden? Kosar??
8:06 - Eric Berry is now playing the role of happy man on the phone. Just like Y1 said, KC needs playmakers and Berry is the biggest playmaker left. That's the smart and safe pick for the Chiefs. Hey, 4 out of 5 picks correct ain't bad. Unfortunately, the Browns now appear screwed.
8:03 - Word on the street was Williams fits the Skins' schemes better. I never thought they would consider Berry with the pressing need at OL and to protect Donovan McNabb that was always the right pick. Now it gets interesting with Kansas City picking. Berry is too good of a player to pass up here I think.
8:00 - Brother Yohey here, this is the first break point of the draft. And the Redskins don't waste any time going with Trent Williams, the OT from Oklahoma. We had the 'Skins taking Okung, but Williams is more athletic and made a late rise. And what the heck is up with Silverback?!? Is he looking to already line up a WWE nickname if his a career is a bust.
7:57 - Although the Bucs and Lions will only combine for about 6 wins next year, McCoy and Suh have a chance to be Pro Bowl quality linemen within 2 years.
7:55 - And the 3rd pick to the Bucs is Gerald McCoy. A lot of emotion from McCoy which is great to see as a dream is realized! And there's a bearhug for the Commish! Here's betting none of these Top 3 ever get called in for a personal conduct review...they all seem like quality human beings.
7:53 - The first of many awkward interactions between Berman and Gruden as the former reminds the latter he was fired by the Bucs. For a look at what the Bucs might be thinking right now, check out our friends at Real Fake Sports!
7:51 - Kiper reminds us that Suh was the #1 player available on his board. Meanwhile Suh was serenaded by chants of Suuuuuuhhhhhh from the crowd. One area the draft has already improved on is the post-player interview. When not being hit on by a drunk Joe Namath, she asks good questions while Bradford and Suh gave very polished interviews. Fans in Detroit and St. Louis should be very happy!
7:47 - The 2nd pick is in and its Suh for the Lions. Clearly the right pick, and if Suh can improve on his dominant performance last season, he can quickly become one of the most dominant D-linemen in the league. And, even better news, we're 2 for 2 on our mock draft!
7:37 - Bradford is on the phone. The pick is in. And the Rams select... Tim Tebow! OK, just kidding. It's Bradford and it's the Rams. Nice job out of ESPN to spoil the pick before the announcement. Banner start. It looks like Bradford has that weird Eli Manning face when he got picked by the Chargers. Even though he has the Rams jersey and hat, the night is still young...
7:34 - Gruden added to the draft coverage is a huge plus. So is Adam Schefter... at least there are a couple worthwhile people amidst the 75 ESPN has covering the draft.
7:32 - And we're underway with the Commish's suckup. We know Bradford will be the pick, but will it be St. Louis or Cleveland?? Apparently the Browns are trying to make a move, but I think it would be silly to mortgage the future with all the needs that they have at the moment. And the Rams are on the clock!!!
7:23 pm - We get the usual video package discussing the transformation of spread QBs to taking snaps under center. Isn't that the most overrated draft debate every single year? Unless Sam Bradford goes out in his 1st preseason game and trips over his center 8 times and wets his pants, I'm not too concerned
7:15 pm - Ok, so this "most valuable picks thing" or whatever is kinda cool... but it does seem a little silly to deem undrafted John Randle as one of the most valuable draft picks of all time, doesn't it?
7:00 pm - Already, we have some good competition for Dumbest Quote of the Night! In the last hour we've had these gems:
(1) Trent Dilfer stated Jimmy Clausen t wa the safest pick in the entire draft! Has he ever heard of Ndamukong Suh or Gerald McCoy?
(2) Cris Carter stated Dez Bryant was the safest pick of the entire draft!? Do either of these guys know the meaning of the word safest? Isn't Dez Bryant the guy with all the character issues?
(3) Ron Jaworski lauded Clausen's QB skills and downplayed the importance of character issues, as long as he was a good QB. Umm, somehow I feel if we were talking about a black WR, say Dez Bryant, Jaws might be singing a different tune.
