Happy New Year from RSS! While the start of the year is traditionally set aside for college football, that's not the case anymore. Here our 5 things we'll be watching as we start the new decade around the sporting world!
1. Rose Bowl - Oregon v OSU
-Everyone in C-Bus is thinking that this is the big game Ohio State will win to turn things around, at least that's what they're saying in public. It's a real contrast in styles between a prolific Oregon offense and a stout Ohio State defense. Oregon will come into the game with much less pressure than the Buckeyes, but defense usually wins in these big bowl games. In our picks, it's 2-1 for the Buckeyes.
2. NHL Winter Classic
-The NHL's new annual tradition has done wonders for the league's visibility. This year sees Fenway Park host the Flyers and the Bruins. It's not so much about the actual game, but seeing hockey played in these historic venues and giving the league a showcase event that is important. The first two were great events to watch, and this one should be no different (especially while Auburn is playing Northwestern and the other games haven't started going yet).
3. #6 West Virginia @ #4 Purdue
-Who would have thought that the juiciest matchup in college sports today would be in basketball. Two unbeatens, WVU and Purdue square off in a college bball showdown. Huggy Bear has really catapulted West Virginia into the national elites very quietly and Purdue is a very tough nut to crack. This game will be a huge statement for either team heading into conference play. Neither will be a favorite of the national media because they lack stars and namepower of Duke or UNC, but these two teams will be amongst the likely candidates for the Final 4.
4. Sugar Bowl - Florida v Cincy
-The other marquee Bowl game today is the Sugar Bowl tonight between unbeaten Cincy and 1 loss Florida. The story is the coaches on the sidelines. Urban Meyer's on again, off again leave of absence has dominated the headlines. I don't think anybody is sure of the whole story there, 1 practice really changed his mind out of resigning? Hiding an ER visit from his family and the program? You just hope that an offseason away from the recruiting trail can get his health right, regardless of how bizarrely the situation has been handled. Speaking of bizarre... Buffalo's head coach will coach Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl because their old coach is coaching Notre Dame and their new coach is coaching Central Michigan still. In spite of all that, it should be a cracking game on the field and closer than the experts think.
5. 2010 PDC Darts World Championship
-Come on now, it wouldn't be RSS if there wasn't at least one outside of the box choice. You might see darts every now and then on your local Fox Sports Net with replays. But, watch them live on one of several streaming video sites (Justin tv is the best one) and you'll be hooked. The atmosphere draws you in and the sheer skill of these guys is unreal. We caught it one day over Christmas break and have been drawn in to the World Championship since. Today are the quarterfinals, and already Simon Whitlock beat James Wade in a terrific match. The top 2 players in the world, Raymond van Barneveld and Phil Taylor play their respective QF's later this afternoon (2:30 East Coast time). 14 time World Champ Taylor faces a stiff test in his protege Adrian Lewis which should be a dandy. Just so you know we're not joking, here is Barneveld's 9 darter (a perfect leg of darts) which won him 25,000 pounds a few days ago. This is cool stuff.
