7 Things We Missed This Weekend

Monday afternoon means it's time for 7 Things We Missed This Weekend! Today's topics include the MLB, the NHL, MLS, NASCAR, the Olympics, and a certain late night host in the news. Roll 'em!

1. One Game Playoff

-The Tigers and the Twins have to move their one game playoff back a day to set up for the Favre Bowl tonight, so they'll decide the AL Central Tuesday. The Tigers can't believe they are in this position after blowing it in their last series of the season against the Chi Sox while the Twins are on a pretty good roll. Minny also has homefield advantage for the play-in game which is a huge advantage. Oh, and Detroit is throwing out a rookie pitcher. Oh, and their best slugger Miguel Cabrera is involved in a police investigation over a fight with his wife. Advantage Twins.

2. Playoff Matchups

-The winner of the AL Central will most likely go down swiftly to the Yankees, but the other three matchups are quite compelling. The biggest Division Series showdown has to be the Cardinals and Dodgers battle in the NL. Even with homefield advantage, it'll be hard for LA to beat Carpenter and Wainwright. The Phillies shouldn't have that much trouble with a resurgent Colorado, but Rocktober is always unpredictable. The final series sees Boston looking to end the Angels' season yet again. Don't be surprised to see the Sawx and Yanks meeting in the ALCS once again.

(I need to see that happen because I'm still living with the curse of 2004. Part of this Yanks' drought is my fault. Up 3-0 in the ALCS, I took a broom into a friend's room in college who happened to be from Boston. Ummm... needless to say I feel some guilt over that comeback and the struggles of the Bronx Bombers since then. Please clear my consience so I can live freely again!)

3. NASCAR
-Tony Stewart won in Kansas. Exciting. Why is Kansas in the Chase schedule along with mediocre tracks like Dover and Loudon? Where's Darlington? Where's Daytona? Where's one of the road courses? The idea of racing in Kansas doesn't exactly get the juices flowing. Anyways, the top of the Chase tightened up with good showings from Stewart and Montoya. Mark Martin stays in the lead and is one step closer to his first title. If you're interested, a link to the post-race interviews.

4. Sigi's Back
-We were at Crew Stadium to see Columbus' record MLS home unbeaten streak end to former coach Sigi Schmid and the Seattle Sounders. The shock was reigning MVP Guillermo Barros Schelotto missing a penalty with less than 10 minutes left that would have equalized. It was a playoff atmosphere in C-Bus and with the win Seattle moves into one of the Wild Card playoff spots. The Sounders have the talent to perhaps pull a Red Bull from last year and go all the way to the MLS Cup final. It was a thrilling contest as Columbus searched for an equalizer, but couldn't find it. As always, a link to MLS net for the highlights

5. The NHL Is Finally Here!
-And I don't really have much more to say. Go Pens?

6. Chicago's Blues
-The sales pitch of Oprah and the Obamas couldn't bring the Olympics to Chicago. It's funny to watch the political spin trying to make this into a huge statement on Obama's ability to run the country. I forget where I heard it, but the joke is that the IOC stands for International Organized Crime, so the bidding probably isn't the most pristine process. While it would have been nice to have the Olympics in the Midwest, it's good for Rio and South America to host their first Olympics. The Olympics are cool, but deciding the host city for 7 years from now doesn't need to take over the country. Since we're fair and balanced at RSS, a link to the Fox News and MSNBC takes. No way I would embed either Karl Rove or Keith Olbermann.

7. Letterman Did What??
-Our random story of the weekend comes from David Letterman who exposed an extortion scheme against him on the Late Show! And folks laughed about it! Ok, so Letterman wasn't married, but doin' it with multiple staff members is just plain creepy, especially when you're an old, awkward dude like Letterman. This story has to take the cake for one of the weirdest of 2009. Here's the clip!

We'll be back tonite with the YCS and our #2 Athlete of the Decade. Yes, all this work on a Monday so we don't have to worry about dealing with a certain #4 playing a certain football game tonite... bye for now!
