Protecting The Shield - Week 6 Thoughts

Time for our look back at Week 6 in the NFL. It's a day late because of an entire day of school and other random business. I know you're out there somewhere wondering where Protecting the Shield is, but like the post office we always deliver... even if it's a day late and the package is a lil' banged up.

Underrated Story Of The Week: The Titans Are On Their Way To The Worst Turnaround In History

And Vince Young has hardly had to play! Last year, this team finished 13-3, they started 10-0, they had the best record in the NFL. They had perhaps the best defense in the NFL and one of the most respected coaches in the league. Sure, the Titans lost in the first round of the playoffs to Baltimore, but they were one of the elites of the NFL. Good grief, even Kerry Collins resurrected his career again for this team. Coming into 2009, the Titans had to be considered among the favorites to win the AFC.

Umm.... about that. They're 0-6! 0-6! Zero wins. None, zip, zilch, squadush. Folks talk about a worst to first turnaround all the time, but what about first to worst? The Titans might inexplicably be on their way to the single worst one season turnaround in NFL history. From a #1 seed and a 13-3 season to 0-6 on their way to perhaps only 1 or 2 wins. The shockingness isn't just that Tennessee is losing, but losing huge. They allowed 59 points to New England in 3 quarters!! If NE had played it out the full 60, it would have been the biggest blowout in history. Sure, there are a lot of bad teams, but this is perhaps the strangest and most bizarre story in the NFL this season. Now Jeff Fisher's shown wearing a Peyton Manning jersey at a charity event, oy...

Overrated Story of The Week: Jim Zorn Is Stripped Of Play Calling Duties
-This just in.... the Redskins offense is awful. Actually, that's offensive to anything that can be considered awful. They're 29th in scoring at a robust 13.2 ppg, which is even more impressive considering they are the first team in NFL history to play their first 6 games against winless teams. They couldn't score a touchdown against the state of Missouri in 2 games! They benched their starting QB for Todd Collins?!? We all know they're bad, but the real story is how Jim Zorn is given play calling, QB coaching, and head coaching duties at the same time... Jim Zorn?!I don't think the President has that sort of ability, and you hand it all over to Jim Zorn?? The real story here is how such an inexperienced coach, and a team like the Redskins, could give so much power to Jim Zorn in the first place.

3 Stars:

3rd Star: Eddie Royal (WR-Broncos)
-A punt return and kickoff return TD is an impressive feat. The Broncos being 6-0 is perhaps even more impressive.

2nd Star: Drew Brees (QB-Saints)
-369 yards and 4 TDs against a Giants D that was supposed to shut him down. Brees was simply amazing on Sunday in a huge statement win for the Saints and for this team moving forward.

1st Star: Tom Brady (QB-Patriots)

-6 TDs for the Golden Boy including a record 5 TDs in the second quarter against the Titans on Sunday in a game that should have been called at halftime if not sooner. So, what was that about Tom Brady wearing a skirt again...

Fab 5:
1. New Orleans
2. Denver
3. Minnesota
4. Indy
5. Atlanta

-A thought about our rankings: The Saints rise to #1 by dismantling the G-Men, Minny is lucky to not be 4-2 thanks to a lucky hail mary and a missed FG. Denver finally gets their due proving their worth in a road win at San Diego. Finally, Atlanta's wins over SF and Chicago means they come in at #5 as the best of the 1 loss teams.

11 Random Observations:

1) Watching the Saints/Giants game, it was amazing to see the Saints receivers running wide open down the field all game long. Their offense was firing on all cylinders. While the Pats might have put up 59 against an awful Tennessee team, New Orleans absolutely dismantled the Giants D. It might be the most impressive performance of the season thus far.
2) I'm almost scared that the Saints look this good. As a Saints fan, I actually have no idea how to feel at this point. Someone who roots for good teams please let me know what I'm supposed to think at this point...
3) A final note from the NO/NYG game, a shout out to Ed Hochuli who is by far the best official in the NFL, last year's controversy aside. His replay explanations alone should be enshrined in Canton.
4) Philly! What on earth was that?? Not only did they make JaMarcus Russell look viable, but they were absolutely shut down by the Oakland D. By the way, where's that impact from Michael Vick?
5) Can anyone figure out the Houston Texans? A road win at Cincy is nice, but they're 3-3 and perhaps another 8-8 season is on the cards. Every time you expect them to win, they lose and vis a versa.
6) Antwan Odom's loss for the season might be worse for the Bengals than the game against Houston. Pittsburgh is slowly creeping in the rear view mirror.
7) Baltimore, however, is now a shadow of their former selves. Although they should have beaten Minnesota (the luckiest of the unbeatens - should be 4-2), their D has been stunningly porous. And, they should get a kicker who can make a 44 yarder in a dome.
8) Both the Bucs and the Rams might be looking at 0-16 seasons, they should have beaten Carolina and Jacksonville respectively and played their best games of the season on Sunday. Maybe they're collectively trying to outdo the Lions.
9) I love, love, love the AFL unis, but the Broncos road unis with the Brown/White socks and Brown/Yellow pants just didn't look right. As long as you're 6-0 though, I guess it's not that big of a deal.
10) Congrats Derek Anderson on getting to 9 completions on Sunday! The far off dream of double digit completions now doesn't seem so far away. In the words of Marty Schottenheimer, "There's a gleam men, let's get the gleam!"
11) The Bears' loss at Atlanta was a tease. They never looked like winning that game, but crucial TOs from Cutler and Forte cost them in the end. Is it true about Cutler that he's good enough to keep you in games but not win? The Bears will have a while to figure it out with that 2 year extension they just gave him.

What Happened In Week 6 That Will Change The Season: The AFC East Reverts Back To Form

Oh, we forgot to mention something... the Sanchise threw for 5 INTs against Buffalo on Sunday. 5 INTs?? I guess those firefighter DNA genes that Cowherd keeps talking about couldn't keep him from burning down the Jets playoff hope. Of course, the NY media has turned on him already, and Rex Ryan considered benching him. It looks like the Jets are on their way back to earth.... while New England is back on top where they belong. That 59-0 game in the snow in Foxboro is a sign that the Pats aren't joking around anymore. Hopefully the Jets enjoyed those first 3 weeks when they were the darlings of the nation, and hopefully they have fun fighting it out with the Bills and Dolphins for 2nd place in the AFC East.
