Top 10 D'oh Moments Of The Decade

In the words of the great Homer Simpson, these are the moments in sport of the last decade that just make you say d'oh! Easy enough to explain, right? These moments from the past 10 years in the world of sports are the biggest bloopers and screw ups of the decade. They could be innocent plays, awful decisions that change the sports landscape, or overeager fans adding to the aura of a curse. Whatever the case, these are the times that make you just want to say d'oh! Hopefully all of these guys will be able to look back and laugh too someday, well... maybe. But, what is a d'oh moment? Maybe we should have someone explain...

With that inspiration, let's check out our Top 10!

#10 Randy Johnson Hits A Bird
-This one is fairly self-explanatory... I don't think the bird is going to come back and laugh at this video, in fact... I'm pretty sure the bird is dead. That's kind of sad, isn't it? Eh, in the words of Harry Doyle in Major League II, "who cares, it's a rat with wings."

#9 Bill Gramatica's A Moron

-For some reason, there is no internet video available of the diminutive place kicker injuring his ACL in mid celebration after putting the Cardinals up 3-0 in the 1st Quarter of a game at the Giants in 2001. I'm sure tearing your ACL and pretty much ending your career was worth that amazing celebration. No props, jackets, sharpies, or cell phones... just pure ligament carnage! Hopefully these pics will be enough to help you relive the lunacy of the Dancin' Gramaticas!

#8 The NHL Lockout
-The most sobering d'oh moment of the decade was the NHL canceling an entire season. The sport still hasn't recovered as the league is languishing on the Versus network and has been surpassed by poker and NASCAR as more popular and visible sports. Gary Bettman, take a bow! Here's a glowing SportsCenter tribute to the way things used to be...

#7 Ricky Davis Shoots At His Own Net
-Get Buckets Ricky... even if they are at your own net! For Ricky Davis, his well traveled NBA career has seen himself most known for this play vs the Utah Jazz where he was one rebound shy of a triple double. Then, he launched an ingenious plan. Jerry Sloan's expression at the end of this clip says it all!

#6 Patrick Stefan Empty Net D'oh!
-This video speaks for itself as Patrick Stefan of the Stars tries to finish a game in Edmonton with an empty net goal in 2007. Stefan slips to create a harmless and hilarious blooper, I mean, at least the Oilers didn't tie it in the last second... whoops...

Honorable Mention goes to Keith Ballard of the Panthers for almost decapitating his own goalie Thomas Vokoun just a couple weeks ago... not the best decade for the NHL...

#5 Bud Selig Declares The All Star Game... A Tie?!?

Congrats to Bud Selig for being the 2nd commish to make our list! What an accomplishment for the decade! Your ruling to declare the 2002 All-Star Game a tie was perhaps the dumbest decision of the decade. I don't care if it's just an exhibition game, this is the Midsummer Classic. Do you think the fans that paid hundreds of dollars were content seeing this joke play out? How bout a HR derby? Or a race around the bases? Or flipping a coin? Of course, maybe this was just a grand scheme to make the ASG meaningful to determine homefield advantage in the World Series. Look at the pic though, do you really think he's that smart??

#4 Manny Being Manny

-I don't think I've ever laughed as much watching a single sports play than when Manny Ramirez cut off Johnny Damon in 2004. Thanks to the MLB brass and their Fort Knox like grip on internet video clips (another d'oh worthy policy) a video is extremely hard to find. Try your luck here on the MLB website if the video will actually work for you. Only Bud Selig could screw up this countdown... what's a good picture to symbolize that? Oh yea....

#3 Ruben Rivera's Baserunning Classic
-Please, please, please watch this video because it might not last for long on Youtube. This features perhaps the greatest announcing call of the decade as Jon Miller describes the beauty of this all-time classic d'oh moment from Ruben Rivera in 2003!

#2 Zinedine Zidane & The Headbutt Heard Round The World
-Of course this video is probably the most well-known of our selections worldwide as it took place on the biggest stage in all of sports: the 2006 World Cup. French legend Zinedine Zidane decides that he wants to go out in style by being tossed in his final game (ala Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in Forget Paris, highly underrated movie). The image of him walking past the World Cup trophy is one of the lasting images of this or any decade...

#1 Bartman

-Unfortunately no embed capabilities for the video, but you can find it here. Was there any other logical choice for the numero uno d'oh moment of the decade? Any Cubs fans out there? Too soon??

No Randall Simon incident as a top 10 d'oh moment on a blog named after such? tisk tisk!

Ah, a fair point, but we at RSS have never seen Randall's "incident" as a d'oh moment. In fact, it was the inspiration for this blog's birth. If there were a Top 10 Inspirational Moments of the Decade, you can bet we wouldn't miss Randall!

the Grey Cup this year (2009) should be in this list. Riders almost knocked out the favourites, up by 2, no time left. other team kicks field goal and misses it, should be Grey Cup to the Riders. but they had one too many men on the field. so the other team(Allouettes) gets another kick and gets the Grey Cup winning field goal. Rider fans will never live that down

Don't forget moment 10-A, where a listmaker cannot tell the difference between a Hurricanes jersey and a Panthers jersey.

:-P

The goalie slashing was a Florida Panther thing, not a Carolina Hurricane thing.

Hahaha... duly noted Tim! Thanks for the catch of my own d'oh moment! I guess I was right about the league losing visiblity, especially when bloggers can't remember the difference between a Florida Panther and a Carolina Hurricane.

Adam, thanks for the reminder about the Grey Cup... we'll see if that makes it in as an updated honorable mention, keep the d'oh moments coming RSS Nation!

You've got to include Canseco taking a fly ball of the head for a home run.

A great blooper anonymous, but that happened in 1993... maybe for our Top 10 D'oh Moments of the 90's that will get a look... along with Jordan leaving the NBA and the Macarena

How about Luis Castillo's pop fly mis-adventure against the Yankees that scored 2 runs to lose the game for the Mets

For the 90's you have Leon Lett - 2 of them. Super Bowl getting stripped just before the goal line while hot dogging. Then on Thanksgiving day against the Dolphins.

The Amercian female cross country snow boarder that was on her way to the sport's first ever Olympic gold medal but tried a showboating stunt on the last jump to celebrate and fell on her *ss allowing two racers to pass her up. Tragic but hilarious!

Can't forget the Nationals. They can't even spell their name correctly.
