If you're anything like us at RSS, you hate the BCS, too. Not because it doesn't produce a thrilling regular season, but because it's inherently unfair. No other major sport decides their national champion by computers and polls instead of on the field of play. So, the YCS Comittee has decided to throw its hat into the ring of what a fantasy college football playoff would look like. However, ours as always is a little different.
The Rules:
The rules of the YCS fantasy playoff are simple.
1) Instead of a boring old 8 or 16 team tournament, the YCS Fantasy Playoff is a 10-team tournament, featuring the conference champions of the 6 current BCS conferences and 4 at-large selections.
2) In a concession to the BCS conferences for accepting such a playoff, each of the major conference champions earns a bye into the Round of 8, or our first round.
3) The 4 at-large selections play two preliminary round games to earn their way into the Round of 8. The two matchups in the preliminary round will be determined through a random draw.
4) The Round of 8 will be reseeded after the preliminary round according to the final regular season YCS standings.
5) The tournament is single elimination, with each game played at neutral bowl game sites.
The Teams
The 6 conference champions earning a bye into the Round of 8 are:
Big 12: Texas
SEC: Alabama
Big Ten: Ohio St.
ACC: Georgia Tech
Big East: Cincinnati
Pac 10: Oregon
The 4 at-large selections are the next highest rated teams in the YCS:
TCU, Boise St., Florida, Iowa
So, how do these four team match up in our preliminary round to see who moves on in the YCS Fantasy Playoff (Disclaimer: Results are based on the highest tech mental simulations of the YCS Committee)
The Preliminary Round
(1) TCU vs. Iowa
-Our first bout pits TCU, one of the consesus best teams in the country, against Iowa, who was the last team to make it as an at-large selection. On a neutral field, this one looks like a sure defensive stalemate. But, on both sides of the ball, TCU has more playmakers. Add to that their body of work over the season, and TCU earns their way into the Round of 8.
TCU 24 Iowa 13
(2) Boise St. vs. Florida
The other preliminary round game is the antethesis of the first, a wide-open shootout between two dynamic offenses. The QB battle is more even than you would first think between Tim Tebow and Kellen Moore. But, after losing in the SEC Championship, the Gators come out in their preliminary round game looking to make a statement. While Boise has been giant killers before, Florida wears them out, and it's not even close.
Florida 45 Boise St. 17
